Senior management at Welk believes they found several favorable conditions for doing business here. “Mexico, and particularly Cabo, has everything vacationers from the United 64 States and Canada love,” says Don Dubin, with Welk Resorts. “The dollar goes a long way, security is excellent, service levels are the finest in the world, and the Mexican people are engaging and warm. We believe this project is an excellent value and a good fit for our owners in the Welk Resorts Platinum Program.” Azcárraga points out that tourism numbers of vacationers to Mexico are already starting to recover. He says developers in Mexico must focus on those things that can be controlled, such as providing a quality vacation experience and targeting a market that has shown they appreciate traveling. He tells us that currently, in terms of popularity of tourism destinations worldwide, Mexico is the eighth highest, and he thinks it should be even higher. Despite the industry’s various challenges, Mexico has plenty in its favor. Given the long tourism season of great weather, the warm friendly nature of the Mexican people, the government’s support for timeshare development, the provision of strong security in tourist areas, and the favorable exchange rate for U.S., Canadian, and European vacationers, there is every reason to believe that he’s right.
