COMMUNITY INITIATIVES “Going Green” Committee Makes Impact on Grand Pacific Resort Services Grand Pacific Resort Services (GPRS), a privately owned vacation ownership management company located in Carlsbad, California, has launched a series of initiatives aimed at promoting environmental practices to reduce environmental impact, improve the bottom line, and also satisfy owner and guest expectations for environmentally conscious hospitality practices. A “Going Green Committee” was formed to pioneer, champion, document, and create new operational strategies for implementation of these practices at GPRS managed resorts. GPRS divided its Green Initiatives program into four components: (1) Water (linen and towel re-use program, shifting laundry operations to off-peak hours, low-flow shower heads and water aerators, etc.); (2) Air (standardized ambient thermostat settings, a welcome breakfast to educate guests about smart A/C usage); (3) Energy (installation of energy management controls on hot water systems to monitor and reduce gas usage, retrofit lighting to compact fluorescent- CFL and replacement of existing roofs with “cool roof” products); and (4) Waste (recycling program with recycle containers in each unit and in key public areas). SPM Resorts Announces Regional Vice President Operations Promotion SPM Resorts, a full-service professional timeshare resort management company, recently announced that Drew Langway has been appointed regional vice president of operations. The management company provides services to 30 timeshare resorts, serving approximately 100,000 owners/ customers. Langway began working with SPM Resorts in 2007, beginning in the management trainee program, and was appointed Regional Director of Operations in 2008. He holds a South Carolina Real Estate License. toward Gal to Gal Foundation, which supports those battling Fourth Stage Breast Cancer. Organizations that donated to the on-line philanthropic endeavor included Bluegreen Vacations, Dial-an-Exchange, Festiva Resorts, Great Eastern Resorts, Hotel Playa Mar, ILX Resorts, ICE, Interval International, Island One Resorts, Leisure Link Universe, ResorTime.com, RCI, SFX Preferred Resorts, Shell Vacations, Tartan Management, Travel Advantage Network, Quarter House Resort, and Vacation Exchanges. Bidders came from backgrounds—individuals, resorts, recreational real estate developers, vacation clubs, and funding/lending institutions. Santa Claus, Sebastian the Ibis, and Local Sports Teams Make Holidays Special for South Miami Kids Several members of the University of Miami baseball team show their support for the hometown community by volunteering their time to distribute toys at the annual Interval International/City of South Miami Holiday Toy Fest. Women in the Industry (WIN) On-line Philanthropy Auction Doubles its Goals Women in the Industry (WIN), an organization professionally supporting and cultivating future women leaders in the vacation industry, has announced the results from its first on-line auction to support its philanthropic initiatives. The auction garnered over $10,000 to fund 2010 philanthropy projects; these funds will be used in part to support Girls Inc. “Collegeship” fund and will send four girls and two counselors to visit out-of-state colleges this spring. The second major philanthropic efforts are directed Interval International and the City of South Miami co-sponsored the Holiday Toy Fest, which benefited more than 400 deserving children in the community. Each child had the chance to visit with Santa and select a holiday gift. Other highlights included “Frosty’s Face Painting” and some tasty treats. Along with Santa and his special elf, members of the University of Miami Hurricanes football and baseball teams and Sebastian the Ibis (UM’s mascot) volunteered their time to make this holiday a very special one for the children. Interval employees supported the annual event by donating both gifts and their time to the Holiday Toy Fest, one of the many community service initiatives that the company hosts throughout the year.
