THE COLOR SHAMAN
Art works. San Francisco creative Chor Boogie channels
influences from da Vinci to Dali to Vulcan and mixes in his
own muse to create vivid visuals with a deeper mission.

COLORS CAN INSPIRE. But to Bay Area artist Chor Boogie, they can also heal. The

aerosol maven experienced what he describes as a "deep spiritual healing" with help
from an African Bwiti shaman and the sacred psychedelic plant, iboga, in 2014.
The same year, Société Perrier named him one of the Top 10 U.S. Street Artists.
That transcendent awakening, followed by a trip to Africa that culminated
in a full initiation into his shaman's tribe, has had a major impact on the
artist's color therapy techniques. Here Boogie, born Joaquin "Jason" Hailey in
1979, shares his thoughts on bringing street culture alive through art.
WE'RE SEEING A LOT OF GRAFFITI-STYLE ART POPPING UP IN HOSPITALITY
PROJECTS. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS DRIVING THAT TREND? 

Well it's the hot thing now. People are adapting and adjusting to what is
new, so aesthetically speaking, such work fits the raw interiors and
structure of any project ... as long as the artist has the experience to do
a professional job and keep the client pleased.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE INTERIOR DESIGNERS ON HOW TO
INCORPORATE COLOR THERAPY TECHNIQUES IN THEIR OWN WORK? 

Find an artist that knows how to use colors in a way you've never seen before.
Honestly, experimentation is key. Trial and error can get you pretty far. Overstate your colors and play with them for a bit until you are comfortable
with your design.
WHAT DOES SPRAY PAINT OFFER THAT OTHER ARTISTIC MEDIA DON'T?

It's the same, just a different tool of communication, especially when it
comes to technical skill. It's also a young art form in contrast with the
classics. It's fun and faster.

You can say, "NEXT!!!!" when you're bombarded with external influences.
Then look internally and influence yourself. It's your choice if you want to
follow or lead (no ego intended). If you don't know your history you're bound to
repeat it, so honestly my suggestion is to make it happen. Dig deep within to
find something that you feel is original and, trust me, you will know when your
stuff stands out from the rest of the flock. Then BOOM-you got it. 
