N.R. Narayana Murthy

For vision and leadership in advancing IEEE's global
visibility and recognition as an innovator in technical,
publication and educational services

For founding and leading the extraordinary growth of
Infosys Technologies, Ltd., notable for its ethical stance,
and for supporting empowerment of members of
disadvantaged rural communities

Dr. Tien has left a lasting imprint on IEEE during his more than
25 years of volunteer service. He has been involved with over 60
committees and boards, especially the IEEE Technical Activities
Board (TAB), Publication Services and Products Board (PSPB)
and Education Activities Board (EAB). He was instrumental in
establishing important policies for IEEE journals and magazines.
Serving IEEE's PSPB as both chairman and vice president, Dr.
Tien helped lead the migration of IEEE publications to an allelectronic-based subscription product called the IEEE/IET
Electronic Library (IEL). He worked closely with IEEE marketing
and sales staffs to initiate a pricing model based on usage for
corporations subscribing to IEL, which became the IEEE
Enterprise product. These important accomplishments not only
made IEEE publications more accessible but provided new
revenue sources. Dr. Tien led efforts to improve the quality and
readability of IEEE's flagship publication, IEEE Spectrum, that
resulted in readership beyond IEEE members. Dr. Tien was also
instrumental in EAB efforts in the development of the ThomsonIEEE Expert Now online resource to provide convenient access
to the best cutting-edge short courses from IEEE conferences.
He also established the EAB Public Awareness Committee to
promote understanding and awareness of how engineers play a
vital role in the world economy and how their contributions
enhance quality of life. An IEEE Fellow and a member of the
U. S. National Academy of Engineering, Dr. Tien is currently a
Distinguished Professor at the University of Miami, Fla. and dean
of its College of Engineering.

One of the world's most admired business leaders, N.R. Naryana
Murthy co-founded Infosys Technologies in 1981. Infosys was
built with a strong values system that promotes fairness to its
employees and emphasizes merit, innovation and excellence
across its operations. The Global Delivery Model pioneered and
designed by Mr. Murthy has become the cornerstone of India's
success in information technology outsourcing.
Mr. Murthy has created opportunity for India's rural areas and
underprivileged population with the establishment of The
Infosys Foundation. The Foundation was established to improve
healthcare, social rehabilitation, education, art and culture in
India and has even provided relief efforts for those affected by
natural disasters. The Infosys Science Foundation was created in
2009 to promote science research in India. This research is vital
to address the country's developmental problems. The Infosys
Science Award will be awarded to honor outstanding researchers who will make a difference to India's future. Other examples
of Mr. Murthy's commitment to engineering excellence include
training programs for teachers throughout India, Infosys
Fellowships that fund doctorate programs at many Indian universities and exposing students to real-world projects at Infosys.
He has led many key corporate governance initiatives in India.
Through Infosys, Mr. Murthy has instilled throughout India the
hope that even people from humble backgrounds can create a
successful company by applying vision, passion and hard work.
Mr. Murthy is currently chairman and chief mentor at Infosys
Technologies, Ltd., Bangalore, India.
