Their missions may differ, but together they’re emblematic of the impressive scope of San Francisco arts and culture. Yerba Buena Center for the Arts One of the nation’s leading centers of its kind, YBCA believes that contemporary art is at the heart of community life. The center brings together audiences and artists of all backgrounds to express and experience creativity through performing and visual arts, ﬁlm and video, and community engagement programs. YBCA is known for nurturing emerging artists at the forefront of their ﬁelds and presenting works that blend art forms and explore the events and ideas of our time. As part of its commitment to the San Francisco Bay Area, YBCA supports the local arts community and reﬂects the region’s diversity of people and thought through its arts and public programming. This month on stage: Bebe Miller Company’s A History, January 25–26; and in the galleries The Parade: Nathalie Djurberg with Music by Hans Berg, through January 27. Contemporary Jewish Museum Since its founding in 1984, the Contemporary Jewish Museum has engaged audiences of all ages and backgrounds through dynamic programs that make the Jewish experience relevant for the 21st century. Ever changing, the CJM is a non-collecting institution that partners with national and international cultural institutions to present exhibitions that are both timely and relevant. Embracing a range of artistic disciplines and media, the exhibitions and related programming include contemporary art and historical objects, ﬁlm, music, lectures, literary readings, and other live performances. The Daniel Libeskind–designed facility, completed in 2008, is a compelling landmark. This month at the CJM: The Radical Camera: New York’s Photo League, 1936–1951; The Snowy Day and the Art of Ezra Jack Keats; and Black Sabbath: The Secret Musical History of Black-Jewish Relations.
