Elevating Dance to New Heights Alonzo King LINES Ballet reinvents classical dance for a contemporary world. BY WES ISLEY T PHOTO BY MARTY SOHL; KEELAN WHITMORE, DANCER hink you know ballet? Visionary choreographer Alonzo King and the 12 dancers in the Alonzo King LINES Ballet Company beg to differ. Sure, you’ll occasionally see a pair of pointe shoes in a performance, but King’s artistic vision draws inspiration from diverse cultural sources to transform the techniques and lines of classical ballet into something refreshing and contemporary. “The term LINES alludes to all that is visible in the phenomenal world,” says King, artistic director of the company he launched in 1982. “Lines are in our ﬁngerprints, the shapes of our bodies, constellations, geometry. A line of thought. A boundary or eternity.” Alonzo King LINES Ballet collaborates with composers, musicians, and visual artists to push the expressive potential of ballet. Collaborators have included jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, Mickey Hart, the African BaAka People of the Forest, and the Shaolin Monks of China. This year, the company celebrates its 30th anniversary April 19–28 with special collaborations with contemporary bassist and composer Edgar Meyer and WET Design, a Los Angeles ﬁrm that designs water features. The company enjoys success at home and abroad; in San Francisco, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts hosts the performances. Audiences throughout California, the Midwest, and in Ottawa, Canada, will also have an opportunity to see Alonzo King LINES Ballet perform in 2013 when the company goes on tour. Educational outreach includes a public dance center for adults and teens in downtown San Francisco, a ballet training program, a summer program for younger artists, and a partnership with the Dominican University of California culminating in a bachelor of ﬁne arts degree.
