US Airways - June 2013 - (Page 61)
I crave, the serenity that a quiet alcove provides in
the early morning, and often long after the sun
disappears. The mist rising like a spectral blanket
at daybreak, the shifting, shimmering canvas of
midday, the intimate reflection of a campfire, or
the wide-ranging glow of the moonlight. It’s in
these silent moments that I most enjoy the elemental wonder of water.
“I’m not sure how best to articulate it, but it’s
clear to me that somewhere deep down in my
DNA, sitting and watching water roll by, turn over,
and shift with the winds calms my being in a way
no other form of relaxation can,” says my friend

Bill, a lake-house owner. “It’s sort of a meditation
without meditating. Just a few minutes in a rocker,
eyes on the lake, and nothing else matters.”
My week spent at the Maine lake house helps
me to recover from the accrued stress of life, and to
recharge my batteries in anticipation of the mayhem that awaits when our lives return to “normal.”
I never knew how much our lake getaways meant
to my daughters until we missed a year. One recent
evening, when the dinnertime conversation turned
to summer vacations, both girls pleaded for another
trip to Maine. So, like my brother once inquired of
Fritz Drury, I asked my girls, “Why?”
“There were no sounds of civilization anywhere.
No cars. Nothing,” Maddi replied after considerable
thought. “Then I realized that was the reason I
loved it there so much. I would lay in my bed at
night, feeling like I was listening to silence.
“But if I closed my eyes, and breathed as softly
as I could, everything would come alive,” she went
on. “The frogs croaking, the loons calling to each
other, and the ripples of the lake coming up onto
the shore. These sounds put me to sleep, and then
I’d wake up to the beautiful chirping of the birds,
and I’d say to myself, ‘I think I’m at home.’ ”
Home, indeed. No clever sound machines
required.
