Did this Work? Birds are valuable barometers of the environment. The
species found in any area are related to specific habitats, and the
quality of those habitats. And, the best time to monitor
an area's avian inhabitants is during the early hours
of spring mornings, when birds announce
their presence with distinctive songs.
For these reasons, bird surveys are used to evaluate
conservation actions, particularly specific habitat manipulations. So, I found myself clambering the hills of northcentral
Pennsylvania during early mornings in late May to
count the birds seen and heard at several points
randomly selected within stands planned for habitat-improvement
projects. Navigating those hills, music was in the air, as songbirds lifted their
voices to deter surrounding rivals or attract prospective mates. After listening
intently for several minutes, I broadcast the song of a cerulean warbler, to be sure
I hadn't missed the wispy song of this declining habitat specialist. The site had
been selected for habitat work with ceruleans in mind, and my surveys would
determine if the grant-funded treatments had attracted these songbirds. That's
the essence of applied research and an adaptive-management approach, answering the important question: Did this work? If we find it didn't, we can ask why
and improve our approach in the future. I didn't come across a cerulean warbler,
but to evaluate the habitat improvements, I'll be back to that wooded hillside in
a couple of years, listening again for their distinctive calls, and evaluating this
particular habitat-improvement project.

One Smart Bird: With the start of crow season in early July, the agency's GameTake Survey indicates that more than 17,000 Pennsylvania hunters are set to begin
their annual attempt to match wits with one our most intelligent wildlife species:
the American crow. Matching wits with a crow is never easy. They are recognized
for their abilities to make tools, solve multi-step puzzles, fully understand causeand-effect principle, recognize individual human faces, and hold a grudge against
humans who harass them. They also can teach younger generations what they've
learned. Smart crows can become too smart for their britches, then quickly find
themselves in trouble. Early this summer, one bird's mischievous nature landed it
in the news - on the wrong side of the law. A human-habituated crow interfered
with a Vancouver police investigation when it swooped into a cordoned-off crime
scene and flew off with the primary piece of evidence: a knife. A foot chase by
