Kiewit Supports Higher Education Kiewit Building Group Inc. awarded $7,500 in scholarships to three local high school graduates in August. Selected from a pool of nearly 50 applicants were: Kara Ogawa, Pearl City High School; Ronald Ramones, Nanakuli High School; and Kyra Vila, Maui High School. Now in its fifth year, Kiewit’s scholarship program supports students who plan to pursue a degree in engineering, architecture or construction management. “It’s important to Kiewit to support local students in their educational pursuits,” says Lance Wilhelm, senior vice president of Kiewit Building Group. “We view this program as an investment in our community’s future leaders and as a way to sustain our local construction industry. On behalf of all Kiewit employees, I congratulate the 2012 scholarship winners and wish each of them the best as they begin their college careers.” Pearl City’s Ogawa will attend Drexel University and plans to major in electrical engineering. Ramones, the Nanakuli graduate, will enroll at Washington State University and study mechanical engineering. Maui High’s Vila will attend Virginia Tech University and major in civil engineering. “Our hope is to someday hire the students after they’ve completed their collegiate studies and are ready to enter the workforce,” adds Sheri Mau, director of administrative services at Kiewit. “In the meantime, there’s also the possibility of having them work with us as summer interns.” To date, Kiewit has awarded nearly $40,000 to graduates from Hawaii high schools.
