W W W.HOOD.EDU Alumna Named National Chair of Annual Giving Alison Drum Althouse ’86, P’12, has been appointed to serve as Hood’s National Chair of Annual Giving, a key volunteer position charged with promoting yearly financial support of the annual funds among Hood’s alumni, parents and friends. Althouse’s two-year term began in January. “It is incredibly meaningful to have the opportunity to leave a footprint on one’s alma mater,” Althouse said. “In this position I hope to not only leave a footprint myself, but also show others that they can do the same through their annual financial support.” Althouse, of Richmond, Va., has fond memories of her years at Hood when it was a women’s college, but recognizes the value in changing with the times in order to remain vibrant and viable. This point was made poignantly clear when her son Drew decided to enroll in Hood’s Class of 2012. “I now have the perspectives of an alumna and a parent, which really reinforces my passion and strengthens my commitment to Hood,” said Althouse, a member of the Hood College Parents Advisory Council. “As a parent, I have fallen back in love with my alma mater.” A loyal donor since graduation, Althouse understands the importance of giving to Hood and, in her new position, will encourage all of Hood’s alumni, parents and friends to do the same. Education Programs Earn NCATE Accreditation Hood’s education department programs were recently accredited by the premier national teacher education accreditation organization. Accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education affirms that all six of Hood’s teacher preparation programs meet national standards set by the teaching profession following a rigorous, external, impartial review by professional policy makers and the public. The seven-year review began in 2002 and was completed in 2009. The College is now one of 667 of the approximately 1,200 colleges and universities offering teacher education programs with NCATE credentials. NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as a professional accrediting body for teacher preparation. Teachers who graduate from NCATE-accredited programs have long been acknowledged by private and local school systems as being well prepared for teaching careers and other education-related professions. The accredited education programs include early childhood, elementary and special education, secondary teacher certification, curriculum and instruction, educational leadership and reading specialization. First M.F.A. Student Completes Degree Requirements Hood’s first student to complete master of fine arts program requirements gave his thesis exhibition in December. Cameron Petke showcased his work in an exhibition entitled “Shaping Sound” in the College’s Hodson Gallery. His work—large porcelain bells—is the culmination of two years of research that focused on the evolution of bell design, the cultural use of bells and the development of a modern version of this ancient art form. He also studied the sound qualities and experimented with the acoustical variables that affect the sound quality of ceramic bells. Petke’s bell designs are influenced by Eastern temple bells and their highly polished surfaces replicate ancient marble sculptures. The 60-credit-hour M.F.A. program, which includes courses in the art, science, technology and management of a career in the ceramic Two of Petke’s bells. arts, was added to the graduate school curriculum in 2005. Petke, who has been teaching high school ceramics and art history since 2001, currently teaches at Urbana High School in southern Frederick County.
