W W W.HOOD.EDU Social Work Program Accreditation Reaffirmed Hood’s social work programs were recently reaccredited for another eight years by the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the United States. Hood met or exceeded the Council on Social Work Education’s eight standards that define competent preparation for social work practice. The rigorous, threestep process was led by Joy Swanson Ernst, Ph.D., associate professor of social work and director of the program, along with Lynda Sowbel, Ph.D., associate professor of social work. The 15-month process included a self-study prepared by the social work program faculty, a review of the selfstudy and a site visit by an evaluator, followed by a review of the evaluator’s report and a ruling by members of the Council on Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation. Students who graduate from accredited programs are eligible to take the Maryland state licensing exam and apply for admission with advanced standing to many master in social work programs. Hood’s social work program was initially accredited in 1981, and accreditation must be reaffirmed every eight years. There are 468 accredited baccalaureate social work programs in the U.S. There are currently 40 Hood students majoring in social work. Of those, 15 seniors are in a field placement.
