W W W.HOOD.EDU Ballinger and fiancé Blair also visited.” I, Barbara Morgan Herron, am still working full time and also work with my husband on some of his independent film and video projects. This fall I’ve been taking a screenwriting class at Hopkins, which has been a lot of fun. I’ve also been enjoying college football season via Facebook with freshman roomie Laurie Seymour Carlson, who lives in northern California. We’ve “messaged” our way through several Navy and USC games this year. There are quite a few classmates on Facebook. It’s a great way to stay in touch, share photos, etc. Check it out. Giving Participation: 19.75% · Total Class Dollars: $3,656 Linda Search Atack 2339 Brandt Village Greensboro, NC 27455 ladyship@bellsouth.net As we are all reading this issue some of us may be struggling with the fact that it is 2010—I (Linda Search Atack) know I am. After all of the hoopla for the start of the 21st century, how can it be that we have completed the first decade? Thank you to all of our classmates who supported Hood’s Annual Fund during these challenging times. Collectively we donated more than $16,000 last fiscal year. Hopefully you all enjoyed the holiday season and now we can focus on helping to make this a better year for everyone we come in contact with. We have numerous classmates living outside of the U.S. and I was excited to hear from Margie Arnold Creek who is in Australia. Condolences on the death of her mother this past September. Margie is working to establish a museum/textile art center to display quilts her husband’s family brought to Australia from Pennsylvania, as well as works created by an artist friend that represent a range of Australian cultural history. Margie’s interest in textiles took her to Japan and Turkey in 2009. She is working on a very special quilt for a grandchild due in March 2010. She said she would love to welcome more visitors. Mary Bloodgood VanHyning and her family continue to enjoy the beauty of the East Tennessee mountains. Daughter Laura is moving to Seattle in the new year; son Peter is on the production crew for the TV show “Food Party” and is currently working on 20 new episodes; and son Ted and his family are in Cleveland where he works with Marriott. Mary enjoyed a short visit in September from Betsy Kern Perlstein and husband Jules. Betsy and Jules were riding their Harley Davidson motorcycles from New Jersey to North Carolina and made a side trip over the mountains to Tennessee. I love to hear that classmates are still doing exciting road trips! I am still job hunting for a social work position in a very difficult economy here in North Carolina but the counties are starting to hire again. I am looking forward to spending the holidays with my 3-year-old grandson and his parents, and my younger son and a future daughter-in-law. I know many of us are using Facebook to keep in touch but I have the complete list of classmates, so if I can help you connect with someone please let me know. We have an extensive list of “missing” classmates and before our next reunion perhaps we can work on finding them. We received news from down under. Patti Baldwin Fischer and Wolfgang became grandparents for the first time when daughter Emma and husband Ben had little Chloe Bridget. Son Tyson and his wife Dayna are newlyweds, still “figuring out how to do life.” Wolfgang is busy floating oil and gas companies. Patti is just trying to hang onto the tiger’s tail. Sue Barncord Rinker reports that life continues on at a very steady pace, peaceful and joyful. She and Thom attended a meet-and-greet with Dr. Volpe this summer at the home of Christine Plankenhorn Tischer ’65 in Delaware and were impressed by him and the news from Hood. Sue keeps in touch with Shirl Billings Alcott. Shirl and Phil enjoyed a trip to Alaska with their son Trevor, who has turned into a fascinating young man and is working on his doctoral degree in Utah. Carol Crofoot Hayes’ life has had its ups and downs. She lost her husband in 2001 and son to cystic fibrosis in 2007. She is currently associate general counsel and secretary at The Coca-Cola Company. She’s built a house in Bluffton, S.C., which she loves, and shares a duplex in Atlanta with her daughter. Carol is getting a master’s degree in professional counseling, intending to use it when she retires from her law career. She said, “I am happy in spite of everything and am happy to have had the opportunity to see the world.” Margaret Dunkle continues to split her time between D.C. and Los Angeles. She has been appointed to the North Los Angeles Autism Regional Task Force of the California Senate Select Committee on Autism and Related Disorders, and was selected to co-chair the work group on early identification and intervention. She is senior fellow with the department of health policy at The George Washington Univ. and director for the early identification and intervention collaborative for Los Angeles County. Linda Israel Lamm still lives in El Salvador. The Lamms are winding down, planning on retiring in March 2010 and moving back to the U.S. to a golf community in Boca Raton, Fla. Linda is looking forward to spending lots of time on the links with Doug. Ellen Kiel and husband Russell showed up for my fall Farm Open House. They are keeping busy in retirement, which is no surprise. She loved meeting the alpacas but I really think she was much more fascinated by my chickens. She even took home a freshly laid green egg from one of the Ameraucanas. She and Pat Etzel Parker were planning to get together the following week. Connie Meek wrote and sent a picture from the induction of Coach Karen Klisch into the Hood College Athletic Hall of Fame. Connie was deeply honored to be the person to introduce her and share some personal stories about her time at Hood. Anne Garber Ketchum was also there to celebrate Karen’s induction.
