W W W.HOOD.EDU Class of 1987 Alumna Inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame Kathleen King Kinsey ’87 graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in law and society. One of the most dominant swimmers in program history, Kinsey held virtually every school record during her time at Hood. Three of her records have yet to be equaled— the 100-meter freestyle, the 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter individual medley. In 1986, Kinsey qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships, a first for a Hood student-athlete. A competitive cyclist and triathlete, Kinsey currently lives in Sicily, Italy, with her husband Chris and their three daughters, ages 11, 9 and 7. She has passed her passion for swimming on to her three girls, all of whom have taken to the water with the same spirit their mother exuded when she competed for the Blazers. happy! Mari Padilla Spina was excited to share that she is finally learning how to swim! She loves to visit often with Hoodlums. She and Maribel Martinez Vazquez ’87 had lunch recently and in August she orchestrated a mini reunion with Maribel Martinez Vazquez, Gyna Oliveros, Maritza Bido Nunez, Luz DeBrosse Villanueva and Kim Burns ’87 to see the Broadway play “In the Heights.” Tina Petrohilos Young wrote that she is a second grade teacher with Frederick County Public Schools, earned her master’s in education in 1998 from Mount St. Mary’s and is currently pursuing her administration/supervision certification through Hood’s graduate school. Betsy Reed Ringel loves that so many Hoodlums are on Facebook! She’s been married for 23 years to Jeff. Son Chad is a freshman at the Univ. of Pittsburgh, daughter Elise is a high school freshman and daughter Caroline is in sixth grade. Betsy is busy with yoga as well as school and church activities. She loved seeing roomie Alison Drum Althouse (me!) at Jeff’s USNA 25th reunion in October! Howard Spiegel and Janice Peacock Spiegel ’85 are still doing lab equipment peddling and homemaking, respectively. They are preparing the nest for when daughter Sarah leaves for college in the fall. Howard said, “Sarah wants to move to Europe and marry, and raise a bunch of well-educated kids with a stay-at-home mom. Jason is 14 and a nice mix of scholar, actor, musician and mostly Garner/AirSoft militant! (Ugh!)” Gemmi Teleki de Szek Revay and son Arpad live in Vienna and Arpad now speaks three languages fluently. Gemmi is teaching in a local private school as a part-time native English speaker teacher. Susan Walts Smith has two freshmen this year—one in high school and one at Florida State Univ.! She loves reconnecting with old Hoodies Beth Beans Gilbert, Paige Flory, Kara Dunn Keiser and Alison Drum Althouse (me again) using Facebook. For my own update, I (Alison Drum Althouse) want to share that my older son Drew Althouse ’12 loves being an RA in Coblentz. He’s majoring in chemistry and plays lacrosse for Hood. My younger son Evan will graduate from Clover Hill High School this spring and has committed to Seton Hill (not Hall) Univ. in Greensburg, Pa., as a math major and lacrosse recruit. Michael works in compliance for Capital One, continues to work at USNA (on-field instant replay tech) for football games and I was able to join him this fall as a freelance photographer on the Navy sidelines. I still have lunch with Stacey Robins Baum often and we love catching up whenever our lives allow the interruption! Life is crazy but so much fun! I would love to hear from Hoodlums via e-mail (alison86@verizon. net) or on Facebook! Just a few updates this time. I think that Facebook is replacing our class news, do you? Our condolences to the family of Nancy O’Keefe Feist who died June 19, 2009, in Knoxville, Tenn. I (Marcie Kendall Gibboney) heard from Stephanie Schwartz Pain who wrote that she went to Rehoboth Beach for a weekend with Angela Corio ’86. Rachel Schwartz-Sorenson is still her happy hour companion. Teaching and driving the mama van to countless activities keep her busy. Jan Beaner Monteverde also checked in and gave her first update since graduation. She earned her M.B.A. and has been working as a controller for a ceramic tile distributor. She also wanted to reach out to any other alums who may be living with and caring for a mentally ill child—her 21-year-old son has been in four in-patient facilities since the age of 8. She wanted to provide her e-mail address to anyone who may be in a similar situation: mono392@comcast.net. As for me, I just started a side business, Cliffrose Creative Solutions, with a friend. Our Web site is www.cliffrose-creative.com. We do Web site design, promotional materials and online promotion. Sorry for the shameless plug but we are a women-owned business and would love your support! That was all the news this time. Contact Sharon at 1944 Perry St., Jacksonville, FL 32206. Our condolences to the family of Stacey Lee Stranieri who died Nov. 3, 2009, in Philadelphia. I (Carole Smith Neal) am doing well and still living in Los Angeles, Calif., with my daughter Ayanna, 10. We recently had the chance to visit with Ambreen Yamin-Aziz and her beautiful family in northern California, and then another quick visit at Disneyland over Thanksgiving weekend. I also see Beryle Cosey Jackson ’90 and Elisia Harkins ’90 frequently, as we all live nearby. I speak with Lisa Buss Evans ’92 almost every day and she and her family are doing well in North Carolina. I look forward to hearing from you. Drop me a line to let me know what’s going on.
