“Even the smallest pinprick of
stray (visible or infrared) light can be
blinding in the NVG environment,”
Field said, which is why exterior
lights also must be NVG compatible.
Virtually everything in the cockpit
can emit infrared light. The goggle’s
automatic gain circuitry compensates
by reducing the sensitivity, but this
also reduces the pilot’s ability to see
outside the cockpit. For emergency
medical service helicopters, frequent
NVG customers, seeing wires and
other hazards at night separates life
from death, according to Field.
In developing its NVG cockpits,
EI/ETS designed and manufactures
the necessary post, eyebrow, flood
OAS S
and map lights; lighted bezels; and
various annunciators. The last was the
most challenging, according to Field,
because they needed to work in the
red, yellow and green frequencies, as
required. And then there was pressto-test and dimming requirements.
This expertise led to military and
civilian NVG customers worldwide.
EI/ETS surveys their needs and then
builds customized kits with everything needed to make a cockpit NVG
compatible, according to Field, who
added that he recently returned from
Madrid.
Instrument repair is still a substantial part of its business, Field continued. EI/ETS built many of the instruments coming to the shop decades
ago, and a good number of them are
back for modifications that will give
them new life. Looking into his crystal ball, Field said round gauges will
be around for awhile, but if repairing
them is the only egg in a shop’s basket… Shops must keep their eyes and
minds open because one never knows
what opportunity will “come around
the corner.”
Rather than reacting to technology’s challenges and market reformation, Mid-Continent Instruments and
Avionics has seemingly embraced
its opportunities. As a small Wichita,
Kan., instrument repair station established in 1964, Mid-Continent Instruments added avionics in the 1980s.
Along the way it opened a branch in
California and started manufacturing
instruments, covering the spectrum
