From retrofits to R&D
In addition to helping homebuilders complete their kits, AI
Systems performs a variety of retrofit installations, modifications
and research and development projects.
" We've been working with partners of ours such as
Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics to develop new
devices for these high-performance experimental airplanes, "
Hadlich said. " Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics has
the Flex, a 2-inch digital round custom function display, which
you can write virtually any kind of software for. So far, we've
primarily used it to develop a pressurization display and control
unit. It displays cabin altitude and cabin differential pressure
and has a settable landing field elevation to communicate
with the pressurization system. It's been implemented on the
Epic LT and on the Stratos 716X. We're working on revisions
of it for the Lancair Evolution and Lancair IV-P. "
Recently, the service center installed a new avionics
package, the new Flex pressurization display and an
all-custom switch panel LRU on an Epic LT. The line
replaceable unit features an array of mounted switches and
their corresponding relays inside one box. Every switch
includes text backlit by LEDs.
" The switches look really clean, very much like a certified
aircraft, " Hadlich said. " It's something new that no one's
really done before on experimental aircraft. "
For a Thunder Mustang, AI Systems created a custom landing
gear control board that controls the lighting on the landing
gear system and provides alerts on all three gears and the main
landing gear doors. The service center also engages in small
development projects to meet customers' specific requests,
