The next time you are looking at a panel photo of a
World War II fighter, especially an early one, look for
the Pipsqueak contactor. Usually, it will be mounted
low or to the far right or left. Unlike engine or flight
instruments, pilots did not need the Pipsqueak upfront
and centered in their line of sight. According to Aero
Antique, Pipsqueaks were mounted in the P-38, P-39,
P-40, P-47 and P-41, among others.
Pipsqueak lasted only about as long as the Chain Home
system. When the next generation of radar came out, the
first generation of what is now considered IFF came with it.
The unit sparks the imagination, certainly. Imagine
one flight. The lead aircraft of the formation transmits
for 14 seconds each minute. Across England, radio
operators at various locations would be listening. They
would have just under a quarter of a minute to use
their radiolocation system to get a bearing on the radio
signal. Then, someone would need to phone the bearing
information to headquarters, where someone would plot
the bearings from multiple stations and determine the
location of the flight. I wonder how many people were
necessary to make this happen. Now, imagine multiple
flights. Only four aircraft could use any one frequency.
The radio operators must have been busy listening,
determining bearings, carefully marking the time of
reception, and communicating results.
I was amazed during a 37-year career that I never
learned about or saw a Pipsqueak. The contactor
reinforced some things. No matter how much you
know, you can't know it all. Anything without context
is difficult to figure. Finally, my wind-blowing clockwinding
example wasn't quite as corny as I always
thought. q
