" Because of that, many are encouraging their technicians to
develop the skill sets needed to earn those certifications. I
would expect to see the same with the AEIT. "
But what if you work for a small avionics shop and the
owner/manager isn't interested in the AET certification or
the AEIT endorsement? How will you be able to keep up
with the industry and be ready when you want to move on
to a bigger company?
Brown said that's the beauty of the ASTM Compass with
AEIT guidelines; a technician can download them to create
a self-study program, which will enable them to pursue the
certifications on their own.
While that's an excellent opportunity, it's not a task to be
taken lightly.
" The AEIT endorsement to the AET is an industry
consensus standard developed by Part 145 repair station
managers, avionics shop owners, technicians with extensive
experience, and maintenance educators, " Tramper said.
" The result is a challenging exam that tests not only an
applicant's basic knowledge but also their experience with
performing the tasks required to install avionics systems. "
But, like adding an instrument, commercial or
multiengine endorsement to a pilot license, the AET
and soon the AEIT will quickly become every avionics
technician's ticket to a bigger and broader career.
" The AEA is committed to actively promoting the AET
certification and AEIT endorsement as tools to help our
industry and its skilled workforce keep up with changing
needs, " Brown explained. " We (AEA) will offer AET
certification and AEIT endorsement exams at the AEA
Regionals this fall and future AEA Conventions free of
charge. The cost will be covered by the AEA Educational
Foundation. "
" Hiring someone with these certifications means an
avionics shop needs to spend much less time training the
basic skill sets they need. These certifications ensure that
a technician walking through the hangar door is ready to
work. That's a considerable benefit to both the shop and
the technician. " q
