Brumidi Statue Unveiled in Annapolis
Supreme President George G. Horiates, AHEPA family, and community leaders attended the unveiling of a statue and reception
commemorating Constantino Brumidi, the "Artist of the Capitol,"
in Annapolis, Md., Oct. 19, 2019. AHEPA proudly continues to
join with others to honor Brumidi's legacy and contributions to
America, most recently as one of the statue's donors.
At the unveiling, Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley issued
a proclamation declaring October 19, 2019 as Constantino
Brumidi Day in the city of Annapolis. U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes
(D-MD), an Ahepan, also attended.
Supreme President Horiates addressed attendees of the
unveiling, speaking about the importance of the American
Dream and what Brumidi's legacy meant to America.
Brumidi, born in Rome of a Greek father and an Italian
mother, painted the U.S. Capitol over a 25-year period. His
works include the masterpiece "Apotheosis of Washington" and
Frieze of American History located in the Capitol Rotunda. He
also painted several committee rooms and the West Corridor of
the Capitol is known as "The Brumidi Corridor."
Supreme Secretary James Stasios, Supreme Governor
George Papaspyrou, District 3 Governor Nick Forakis, and
Executive Director Basil Mossaidis accompanied Supreme
President Horiates to the event. Grand Governor Kathy Matrakas
represented the Daughters of Penelope.
During 2007-08, AHEPA joined with the National Italian
American Foundation (NIAF) and the Constantino Brumidi
Society to pass legislation in the 110th Congress that awarded
Brumidi the Congressional Gold Medal, posthumously.
District 5 AHEPA Family Continues to Fight Cancer
The Fifth District AHEPA Cancer Research Foundation has now
awarded $1.17 million in research grants since its inception 30
years ago. This year, researchers from Fox Chase Cancer Center,
Weill Medical College of Cornell University/Children's Blood
Foundation, and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey,
received grants totaling $30,000 at the foundation's 30th Annual
Fall Gala, held Nov. 2, 2019.
Supreme President George Horiates and Daughters of
Penelope Grand President Celia Kachmarski addressed the
guests. The foundation also awarded and recognized Antoinette
Marousis-Zachariades for her years of service to the foundation.
Foundation Chair Christos Prentzas presented the grants to the

researchers. DOP Past Grand President Evellyn Tsiades served
as Master of Ceremonies.
Representatives from Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey accept
a research grant from the Foundation.
