In Short APMA Offers Simple Way to Earn CECH APMA prides itself on offering continuing education and encourages members to take advantage of the latest opportunity to earn continuing education contact hours (CECH). Look for the pamphlet bagged with this issue of APMA News, which includes clinical educational materials from the 2012 Annual Scientific Meeting (The National) symposium, “A Focus on Prevention of GI Harm When Prescribing NSAID Therapy for Arthritis.” APMA is offering additional CECH to DPMs who peruse the materials and then take an online post-test at www.hcpcme.com/apmaarchive.html. The pamphlet is supported through an educational grant from Horizon Pharmaceuticals, and the materials are directly from APMA’s pain management track at The National. CMS Unveils 2013 Medicare Physician Fee Proposed Rule, DPMs See Pay Increase APMA recently submitted comments on the CMS Proposed Rule regarding the revisions to Medicare payment policies under the Physician Fee Schedule for 2013, which was published in the July 30, 2012, Federal Register. APMA developed comments (www.apma.org/workingforyou/con tent.cfm?ItemNumber=1572&navItemNumber=645) based on feedback from APMA’s Health Policy Committee, health policy consultants, and staff. According to the Proposed Rule, podiatry will receive an estimated 1-percent payment increase in CY 2013, based on adjustments for practice expense. Note that only 16 out of 58 specialties have seen an estimated payment increase. In our comments on the CY 2013 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Proposed Rule, APMA voiced its support of the proposal to revise the current regulations—which limit ordering of portable X-ray services to only an MD or DO—to allow other physicians, including podiatrists acting within the scope of their Medicare benefit and state law, to order portable X-ray services. APMA had advocated with CMS on behalf of APMA members for this change. APMA also commented on Durable Medicare Equipment Face-to-Face Encounters and Written Orders Prior to Delivery, the Physician Compare website, the Physician Quality Reporting System, and e-Prescribing. Dr. Caporusso Attends Policy Briefing at White House APMA President Joseph Caporusso, DPM, attended the White House Latino Health Policy Briefing in September with the National Hispanic Medical Association. The meeting focused on health policies from the Affordable Care Act and other key policies that affect Hispanic health. Dr. Caporusso is also involved in Hispanic health-care initiatives as a member of AMA’s Commission to End Healthcare Disparities, which has as its mission proactive collaboration to increase awareness among physicians and health professionals. New Prep Course and Exam for Surgical Foot and Ankle Coding The first Certified Surgical Foot and Ankle Coding (CSFAC) workshop and exam were offered August 20–21 at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV, following the 2012 APMA Annual Scientific Meeting. APMA, in conjunction with the American Academy of Professional Coders (www.aapc.com), developed the CSFAC exam to provide a means for professional coders, podiatrists, orthopedists, and billing staff to demonstrate their expertise in coding medical services and surgical procedures performed on 58 APMA News October 2012 the foot and ankle. The exam features 150 multiple-choice questions (proctored) and is open code book (manuals allowed).
