Ahmed Ali Visits the IEEE SSCS Boston Chapter

On 4 May 2018, the IEEE Solid-State
Circuits Society (SSCS) Boston Chapter had the privilege of hosting SSCS
Distinguished Lecturer Dr. Ahmed Ali
from Analog Devices. He delivered
the presentation "Data Converters and
Their Performance Metrics." Tufts University hosted the afternoon seminar
which was attended by a select group
of university students and industry
nonstudents.
Ali is well known as a lead designer
for many of the world's record-breaking high-performance, high-speed data
converters. The talk provided the audience with the opportunity to hear from
an expert on the fundamental aspects
of the design of data converters, including performance metrics that define
them. Ali started his talk by providing
a general overview of data converters,
with special emphasis on the architectures that are most relevant today.
This was followed by a comprehensive
discussion on the various performance
metrics used to characterize analog-todigital converters (ADCs).
A topic that the audience particularly enjoyed was Ali's unique perspective on pipelined ADC architecture and
how various sources of errors limit its
performance. The question-and-answer

session after the talk was particularly
interesting, with audience members
getting an opportunity to learn from
the expert about what the future holds
for designers in advanced complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology nodes.

Abstract
Data converters are the interface between the real analog world and the digital realm. They are so ubiquitous that,
on any given day, every person in the
developed world will likely use a data
converter in one form or another. Their
applications include sensors, communications, medical imaging, instrumentation, automotive, and video imaging.

For a data converter designer, or a
system designer who uses data converters, it is imperative to understand their
behavior and performance metrics.
Because there are multiple dimensions
of performance, the characterization of
a data converter can be a complicated
and confusing process. In this talk, we
discuss the basics of data converters
and the metrics used to characterize
their performance. The manifestations
of the various converter nonidealities,
their impact on the system's performance, and the relation between the
metrics will also be covered.
