FEATURE ARTICLE energy products in the most conscientious, effective, transparent and accountable way. TSM focuses on crisis management, energy and greenhouse gas emissions management, tailings management, biodiversity conservation management, safety and health, and Aboriginal relations and community outreach. For more information visit www.mining.ca. The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) launched Responsible Care, the chemistry industry’s commitment to sustainability in 1985. It has since evolved and in 2006 its Global Charter was launched. There are currently 52 national Responsible Care programs that cover all aspects of a company's business, including: environmental protection, resource conservation, occupational health and safety, process safety, research and development, transportation, product stewardship, purchasing, security and social responsibility. For more information visit www. canadianchemistry.ca/ResponsibleCareHome.aspx. Conclusions You may be interested in reviewing how other organizations are rising to the opportunities and raising the bar, with respect to CSR reporting. There are a number of reference sites which will link you to recently issued Sustainability or CSR reports from across the globe. In addition to that provided by GRI, I found the CSRHub (www.csrhub.com/content/about-csrhub) to be a helpful resource. The CSRHub's goal is to foster access to information, with the aim of being an engine of transparency that encourages more consistent and actionable disclosure from all types of organizations. I’m still gaining a deeper appreciation of the full benefits of CSR, CSR reporting and its connection to the rare earth supply chains having championed the launch of Avalon Rare Metals CSR Roadmap in January 2011, and the recent publication of the company’s inaugural GRI-compliant Corporate Sustainability Annual Report (March 2012). But as we are all too well aware, the proof is in the delivery. Through transparent and disciplined reporting, all organizations contributing to the rare earth supply chains can claim that not only do our outputs contribute to energy efficient and CleanTech solutions for a better tomorrow, but that we conduct our businesses in the same manner. Ian M London is the Energy and Market Development advisor for Avalon Rare Metals, Inc. Ian has more than 35 years of business experience, including terms as president and CEO of Ontario Hydro International, Inc. and CEO of Process Products Limited. At Avalon Rare Metals, Inc. Ian is focused on the development of rare earth markets and relationships with industry groups. Ian can be reached at ilondon@avalonraremetals.com. Interested in writing a contributed article?
