Bake-Line files bankruptcy, shuts
down seven manufacturing plants

Bake-Line has approximately 1,300
employes in North Little Rock, Ark.;
Marietta, Okla.; Pittsburgh; two plants
in South Beloit, Ill.; and two facilities in
Chattanooga, Tenn.
In a filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court at
Wilmington, Del., the board of directors
of Bake-Line said it had considered the
possibility of filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which would have allowed the
company to liquidate its assets while
still operating its facilities. But upon
the recommendation of management,
the board said it decided that it did not
"have a reasonable possibility of success
in effectuating such an orderly liquidation, because the company would have
insufficient cash and/or financing with

which to continue operations through
the time that a sale of substantially all of
the debtors' assets, or a substantial portion thereof, as a going concern could be
effectuated, and because the board was
unable to determine to its reasonable
satisfaction that the company could meet
all of its postpetition liabilities."
In its filing, Bake-Line indicated that
it will have funds to distribute to unsecured creditors. The company has more
than 1,000 creditors and estimated debts
of more than $100 million. At the same
time, Bake-Line said it has more than
$100 million in estimated assets.
Prior to its bankruptcy filing, BakeLine on Jan. 9 informed workers at its
Pittsburgh plant of its decision to shutter the former Nabisco cracker factory

within the next several months. On Jan.
12 the company told employes at the
plant, which employed 290 workers, to
stay home.
The Pittsburgh facility was owned
and operated by Nabisco for more than
80 years before it was closed in November 1998 as part of a company-wide consolidation. The facility was purchased in
1999 by Atlantic Baking Group, which
bought the bakery with the help of billionaire financier George Soros.
Atlantic Baking changed its name in
2002 after it bought Bake-Line Products
from Battle Creek, Mich.-based The
Kellogg Co., in addition to four baking
facilities of Consolidated Biscuit Co. of
McComb, Ohio.
In addition to its line of private label products, Bake-Line manufactures
goods under the Cup of Joy, Greg's,
Penn & Liberty, Sunny, and Sun Valley

Cargill contributes $100,000 to put into
practice a rural health and safety program
MINNEAPOLIS - Cargill, Inc. has contributed $100,000 to Farm Safety 4 Just Kids to
help implement a new rural health and safety program, which is among the five areas
of focus for promotion by FS4JK in 2004.
Cargill said that its contribution would be
used to develop Rural Health Resource Kits
covering topics including food safety, water

safety, sun safety, respiratory protection,
ergonomics and hearing protection.
The topics will be addressed with brochures, fact sheets, games, interactive activities and puzzles.
Cargill said the ultimate goal of the Rural
Health Resource Kit is the prevention of
injuries and awareness of potential health

Imperial Sugar unveils new web site with focus
on delivering customer friendly information
SUGAR LAND, TEXAS - Imperial Sugar
Co. last week launched a new Internet web
site designed with a focus away from the
company's corporate needs
and more on the needs of
consumers.
The new web site, located
at www.imperialsugar.com, features a vintage
look and includes a number of special tools
for consumers, investors, food service industry customers and others.
"The previous web site was primarily

tailored to meet corporate needs," said Lisa
Shaw, category manager. "Our objective in
redesigning the site was to create a more
customer friendly information source that is also
useful to investors. The
number of visitors to the
new site has really taken off."
Among the new tools available on the
web site are a searchable recipe database
with more than 300 recipes as well as a
health and nutrition section that provides

Garvey buys land to enhance terminal
ST. CHARLES, ILL. - Garvey International, a grain merchandising and processing
company with roots dating to the 1920s,
has purchased additional property to enhance the Ottawa, Ill., river terminal of its
White Material Handling subsidiary.
The property, adjacent to the facility
along the Illinois river in north central Illinois, increases the terminal's size by 43

acres to 134 acres, said Bob M. White, president and owner of Garvey International.
In addition, White Material Handling,
the company's freight and logistics arm, has
increased its inside storage by 75,000 square
feet and 20 acres of outside storage.
Mr. White said that in addition to current barge-to-truck, barge-to-rail, rail-totruck and truck-to-barge grain transfer
