Minnesota reduced acreage by 100,000
acres, while Nebraska and Ohio growers
increased acreage from 2003 by 200,000
and 150,000 acres, respectively.

Producers planted 85% of the 2004
acreage to herbicide-resistant varieties,
up 4% from 2003.
Sorghum plantings in 2004 were estimated at 8,099,000 acres, down 1,321,000
acres, or 14%, from 9,420,000 acres in
2003. Sorghum area harvested for grain
was projected at 6,916,000 acres, down
882,000 acres, or 11%, from 7,798,000
acres a year ago.

up 11% from year ago
WASHINGTON - The United States carryover of wheat on June 1 totaled 546,003,000 bus,
up 54,587,000 bus, or 11%, from 491,416,000
bus in 2003, according to data released June 30
by the National Agricultural Statistics Service
of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The
carryover exceeded average pre-report trade
estimates and was above the U.S.D.A.'s midJune estimate of 541 million bus.
Farm stocks of wheat on June 1 were
estimated at 131,880,000 bus, down 230,000
bus, nearly unchanged from 132,110,000 bus

last year. The percentage of all wheat held
on farms on June 1 was 24%, down from
27% a year ago.
Off-farm wheat holdings on June 1 were
estimated at 414,123,000 bus, up 54,817,000
bus, or 15%, from 359,306,000 bus in commercial hands last year.
Fourth-quarter wheat disappearance was
estimated at 474,614,000 bus, up 59,397,000
bus, or 14%, from 415,217,000 bus in the
same year-ago quarter. For the 2003-04 crop
year, wheat usage totaled 2,281,939,000 bus,
up 39,200,000 bus, or 2%, from 2,242,739,000
bus in 2002-03.
Thirty-one per cent of the total wheat carryover was stored in the hard winter states
of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and
Nebraska, compared with 27% a year ago.
At 168,320,000 bus, June 1 stocks in the

Southwest increased 35,267,000 bus, or 27%,
from 133,053,000 the previous year.
Farm stocks in the Southwest totaled 15
million bus, up 3,200,000 bus, or 27%, from
11,800,000 bus on June 1, 2003. Nine per cent
of the stocks in the Southwest was held on
farms, the same as last year.
Wheat disappearance from the five hard
winter states in the fourth quarter totaled
181,787,000 bus, up 17,986,000 bus, or 11%,
from 163,801,000 bus a year earlier. For the
full crop year, wheat use in the Southwest
was 882,613,000 bus, up
26,248,000 bus, or 3%,
from 856,365,000 bus in
the 2002-03 crop year.
The Upper Midwest
states of North Dakota,
South Dakota, Minnesota
and Montana again posted the largest regional
store of wheat on June
1. At 186,816,000 bus,
stocks in the key hard red
spring states accounted
for 34% of the U.S. total,
compared with 35% last
year. June 1 inventory
in the region increased
12,470,000 bus, or 7%,
from 174,346,000 bus the previous year.
Farm stocks in the Upper Midwest totaled 105,500,000 bus, up 500,000 bus, or
less than 1%, from 105,000,000 bus last year.
Farm stocks accounted for 56% of all wheat
stocks in the hard spring states, compared
with 60% the previous year.
March-May disappearance of wheat from
the Upper Midwest was 152,154,000 bus, up
39,421,000 bus, or 35%, from 112,733,000 bus
during the same quarter in 2002-03. For the
full crop year, wheat use was 663,873,000
bus, up 38,772,000 bus, or 6%, from
625,101,000 bus the previous year.
Stocks of wheat in the Central soft winter
states of Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana
and Michigan were estimated at 53,717,000
bus, up 9,746,000 bus, or 22%, from
43,971,000 bus on June 1, 2003. Only 2%,

4,666,000 acres, down 633,000 acres, or
12%, from 5,299,000 acres in 2003. Harvested area of sorghum was forecast at
4,152,000 acres, down 536,000 acres, or
11%, from 4,688,000 acres a year ago.
Plantings of oats in 2004 was estimated at 4,220,000 acres, down 381,000
acres, or 8%, from 4,601,000 acres in
2003. Harvested area of oats this year
was projected at 1,938,000 acres, down
286,000 acres, or 13%, from 2,224,000

Fourth-quarter disappearance from the soft
winter states was 52,483,000 bus, up 12,220,000
bus, or 30%, from 40,263,000 bus the same period last year. For the 2003-04 crop year, wheat
use totaled 238,524,000 bus, up 4,274,000 bus,
or 2%, from 234,250,000 bus in 2002-03.
Wheat stocks in the Pacific Northwest
states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho on
June 1 totaled 79,623,000 bus, down 6,300,000
bus, or 7%, from 85,923,000 bus the previous
year. Eight per cent of the total, or 6,300,000
bus, was stored on farms, compared with 11
million, or 13%, the previous year.
Wheat disappearance from the Pacific Northwest was 47,270,000 bus in
March-May, down 8,453,000, or 15%, from
55,723,000 bus a year earlier. For the crop
year, wheat use totaled 286,485,000 bus, up
36,382,000 bus, or 15%, from 250,103,000 bus
in the 2002-03 crop year.
Durum stocks on June 1 totaled
26,493,000 bus, down 1,615,000 bus, or 6%,
from 28,108,000 bus in 2003. Farm stocks of
durum were 13,500,000 bus, down 1,600,000
bus, or 11%, from 15,100,000 bus last year.
Farm stocks were 51% of total durum
stocks, compared with 54% the previous
year. Of the on farm total, 10,000,000 bus, or
74%, was in North Dakota, compared with
12,000,000 bus, or 79%, last year.
Durum use in the March-May quarter
totaled 17,754,000 bus, down 10,987,000
bus, or 38%, from 28,741,000 bus the same
quarter last year. For the 2003-04 crop
year, durum use totaled 98,252,000 bus, up
9,814,000 bus, or 11%, from 88,438,000 bus
the previous year.
Corn stocks on June 1 were estimated
at 2,969,685,000 bus, down 15,233,000 bus,
or less than 1%, from 2,984,918,000 bus
the previous year. Farm storage of corn
totaled 1,540,000,000 bus compared with
1,620,200,000 bus a year ago.
Soybean stocks on June 1, estimated at
409,560,000 bus, down 192,802,000 bus,
or 32%, from 602,362,000 bus a year ago,
were the lowest since 1977, the U.S.D.A.
said. Farm storage of soybeans totaled
110,000,000 bus, down 162,500,000 bus, or
