THOMASVILLE, GA. - The board of
directors of Flowers Foods on June 3 announced a three-for-two stock split and
an increased dividend. Both the cash dividend and the stock split are payable on
July 1 to shareholders of record on June 17.
Following the split, the cash dividend will
be 10c per share, which represents an increase of about
20% over the split-adjusted dividend paid during the
previous quarter. Flowers Foods stock on the New York
Stock Exchange was steady at $33.30 per share at midday June 3, nearly unchanged from the June 2 close.

WASHINGTON - A recent study suggesting individuals who are slightly overweight will live longer than those who
weigh less is being widely challenged.
At a news conference last week, Julie L.
Gerberding, director of the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, acknowledged flaws with the study. The study was issued by
the C.D.C. "It is not okay to be overweight," she said.
"People need to be fit, they need to have a healthy diet,
they need to exercise. I'm very sorry for the confusion
that these scientific discussions have had." The disputed report suggested that mildly overweight people had
a 20% lower risk of dying than those who weigh less.

OSAKA, JAPAN - Momofuku Ando,
the inventor of instant noodles and
chairman of Nissin Food Products Co.
Ltd., announced his retirement effective
June 29. Mr. Ando, 95, will remain with
the company in the newly created post
of founding chairman and will continue
to head the Ando Foundation, a philanthropy group
dedicated to the promotion of sports and food culture. Mr. Ando founded the predecessor to Nissin
Food Products in 1948 and invented the world's first
instant noodle, Chicken Ramen noodles sold in bags,
in 1958. In 1971, he developed the world's first cupstyle instant noodle, Cup Noodle.

WASHINGTON - Absent controls and
procedures that essentially lower risk
levels to zero, the Food Products Association is strongly opposed to the use of food
crops to produce plant-made pharmaceuticals. The F.P.A. expressed its views last
week in comments filed with the U.S.
Department of Agriculture. "We cannot overemphasize the importance of the agency and development
companies making an aggressive proactive effort to
develop 'fail safe' systems that anticipate, rather than
just react to, mistakes," said Dr. Jeffrey Barach, F.P.A.
vice-president of special projects. "To date, effective
control programs have not been demonstrated to our
satisfaction." Dr. Barach voiced particular concern
over applications proposed by Ventria Bioscience and
the resultant "clear possibility" that food and feed
supplies may become contaminated. MBN
