Arthur Dunkel, former leader of
GATT, dies in Geneva at 72
GENEVA - Arthur Dunkel, formerly
the director general of the General
Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, died
June 9 following a lengthy illness. He
was 72.
Mr. Dunkel headed GATT - the
predecessor of the World Trade Organization - from 1980 to 1993 and was at
the helm of the organization through the
Uruguay Round of multinational trade
negotiations.
Announcing Mr. Dunkel's death, the
W.T.O. described his December 1991
"Dunkel Draft" as an historic turning
point in the stalled Uruguay negotiations. The draft served as the basis for

an agreement that introduced freer trade
rules for traditionally protected sectors,
such as agriculture and textiles, and
newer areas, like services. It also led to
the 1995 establishment of the W.T.O., the
body that governs global commerce.
"Mr. Dunkel's deep understanding of
the technical issues combined with his
shrewd diplomacy transformed hundreds of thousands of pages of diverse,
often conflicting, proposals into a manageable single document of some 500
pages," the W.T.O. said.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Dunkel
served with good humor, humanity and
dignity, the W.T.O. said. MBN

Jim Duesenberg, longtime allied supplier
to milling and baking, dies at age 62
GREEN VALLEY, ARIZ. - F. James
Duesenberg, active for many years in
the milling and baking industry, passed
away June 14 after a long battle with
cancer. He was 62 years old.
One of Mr. Duesenberg's most significant career achievements was when
he received an award for "Outstanding
Services" from the American Association of Cereal Chemists.

He is survived by his wife, Lola; two
daughters, Lisa Miller of Kansas City;
and Amy Duesenberg of Kansas City;
a son, Mike Duesenberg; and seven
grandchildren.
Memorial services were to be held
June 18 at Mount Moriah Terrace Park
Cemetery in Kansas City North. Memorials may be sent to the American
Cancer Society. MBN
