Deb Boykin, director of residence
life and associate vice president for
student affairs at William & Mary in
Williamsburg, Virginia, has a new
namesake. The Virginia Association
of College and University Housing
Officers renamed their highest award
in her honor. It is now called the Deb
Boykin Outstanding Professional
Award. This December, Boykin will
begin her 34th year of service to William
& Mary, which is also her alma mater.
“I really am thrilled and honored about
it. So often awards are named after
people after they retire or die, but I’m
obviously here alive and not planning
on retiring anytime soon,” she said in
a release. While proud to receive the
award, Boykin was quick to redirect
attention to her fellow residence life
staff and the students they serve. “The
award is very humbling to me, but I’m
equally humbled by the students who
let all of us into their lives,” she said in
a statement.

has made two new resources for
higher education available online:
“Community Partnerships: A Key
Component of Sustainability” by
Sean Williamson, a HEASC fellow,
and Campus as a Living Lab: Using the
Built Environment to Revitalize College
Education, published by the American
Association of Community Colleges
(AACC), Sustainability Education
& Economic Development (SEED),
and the Center for Green Schools
at the U.S. Green Building Council

First Cubo stuDy tour
a suCCess
The Association of College and University Business Officers (CUBO) led
14 delegates from Germany, Australia, Canada, and the United States as
they traveled across the United Kingdom visiting eight universities and
learning about their services and facilities. The tour began in Scotland
with The University of Edinburgh and Queen Margaret University
and continued on to the University of York, University of Sheffield,
University of Liverpool, St Edmund Hall College (Oxford), University of
Greenwich, and Imperial College London. There were also two sessions
presented by The Russell Partnership. Peter Russell discussed STEMS
(Student Transition Experience), the company’s Web-based interactive
tool which offers a suite of modules to help staff and students before and
after they arrive on campus. David Russell discussed their large-scale
estate planning and catering strategy as well as sharing the food legacy
plan that the company employed for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

imPRovEmEnTS nEEDED foR GERman
HiGHER EDucaTion inSTiTuTionS
A recent study of German higher education institutions, the first of its
kind, revealed that students with disabilities there are not receiving the
accommodation they need to help them have a successful university
experience. Participants in the online study included 15,000 students with
disabilities from 160 German higher education institutions. The study
identified problems such as timeline and organizational difficulties, lack of
support, and too little recognition of the students’ individual interests. While
it was found that counseling and other compensation efforts were effective,
they were not used often enough. The study was conducted by Deutsches
Studentenwerk, the German national association for student affairs.

reCeives awarDs
Second Nature, a national nonprofit based in Boston, Massachusetts,
recently received two awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency. It received the Environmental Merit Award for its 20 years
of leadership in the Education for Sustainability field. The founding
president and current fellow, Anthony Cortese, was awarded the
Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his 40-year career. Second
Nature supports the American College & University Presidents’
Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), which unifies colleges and
universities to battle global warming.
