At Treetops North the fine 6,832yard Fazio course delivers character
through tremendous elevation changes.
The course provides a great test not only
of club selection, but also of confidence.
The layout begins with roller-coaster
thrills on a tiered, downhill ride of 431
yards. The first par 3 comes at the fourth
hole, where my group was reminded to
play everything as a lateral hazard. On
number seven, simply hit 259 off the tee
(but not 260) and remember to take two
or three extra clubs. And do not go in
the bunker short and left. If you do, alert
your family that you'll be home later
than expected.
Rees Jones' Black Lake Golf Club,
about an hour from my digs at Treetops
Resort, was built by the United Automobile Workers as part of a retreat and
learning center for members and their
families. This workmanlike course is
consistently solid, if also slightly uninspired. Number two, a right-doglegging
beauty, introduces the theme of wetlands with a 200-yard carry to the fairway from the back tees. More marshy
areas will determine much of your strategy going forward.
Solid par 3s appear at number three
and number five, with very different
looks and shot demands. The third
requires a mid-iron over wetlands to a
raised green, while the fifth is a 206yard challenge suggesting a well-struck
hybrid and lots of air time to sail over a
maze of bunkers. While course features
generally accentuate the natural beauty
of the site, Jones' bunkering is in places
overwrought, twisting into the kinds of
shapes you might see on a microscope
slide. By late in the day you'll have figured out that the many perched greens

group hit into approximately 120 of
them). Par is 34 on the front, so try to
score early.
The course opens with a welcoming
short par 4 with slopes on both sides of
the fairway that carom balls back toward
the short grass. But don't expect this
welcome to last. The course becomes
stouter immediately after your first (or
third) putt drops.
Smith created greens that most
players will love - gigantic and easy to
get to whether you're hitting a long iron
from the fairway or pitching from a
close-in miss. Most have a single hump
or slope to contend with, making them
very fair even on long putts. Several
holes on the course also feature wellplaced trees that add visual appeal and
also guard the greens from certain
angles.
