Experience the Art of Our Time At the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara A t the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB), art isn't separate from daily life - it's a vital part of the community. PHOTOS (FROM LEFT) BY ROBERT REDFIELD AND WAYNE MCCALL Founded in 1976 as an alternative art forum, MCASB has a history of presenting cuttingedge works by the likes of Ann Hamilton, Ed and Nancy Kienholz, and Wayne Thiebaud. Today, the non-profit, non-collecting museum continues that legacy as the only venue between Los Angeles and San Francisco focused solely on contemporary art. MCASB presents an ever-changing roster of exhibitions by local and international artists, encompassing everything from sculpture and painting to photography and film. The museum also commissions artists to create new works specifically for MCASB's gallery space. "We're an incubator for the next generation of artists," says executive director Miki Garcia. "We're laboratorylike - we give space to artists who are experimenting and pushing the envelope." Based on the belief that art should be accessible to everyone, all exhibitions are free and open to the public. MCASB also engages the community with artist lectures, school programs, a hands-on Art Lab, and a four-day performance art festival. This summer, the museum will host the West Coast debut of Italian artist Marinella Senatore's retrospective exhibition, Building Communities (May 11-August 17). In keeping with the theme of Senatore's orchestrated films and public projects, MCASB will also host creative writing workshops, interactive photo shoots, community dances, and a parade in conjunction with the exhibit. It's that combination of creativity and community outreach that makes MCASB a catalyst for new art and new ideas.
