The support means the world to the team's breast cancer
survivors on various legs of their journey, from recent recovery
to almost 30 years survivorship. It's a team of deep belonging.
"God put me here," said Alison Hall, a 14-year breast
cancer survivor. "You just can make a connection so easily. My
husband, Edgar, has Parkinson's, so between the Parkinson's
community and this community (in The Villages), I feel very
blessed to have a set of friends available who can understand."
Sue Nock, a 10-year breast cancer survivor, helped launch
the team in November 2011 as the only all-women dragon
boat group in The Villages.
The Dragon Sisters is one of several Villager teams in the
Grand Masters Dragon Boat Club - one of the largest Dragon
Boat Clubs in the United States. Dragon boating dates back
more than 2,000 years to a larger Chinese cultural tradition.
"It's the camaraderie of having a team of other people
who have gone through the same life crisis," Nock said. "It's
really been a good thing knowing you could do a competitive,
physical sport even though you've been through surgeries and
chemotherapy and all that."
The survivors help inform the rest of the group, and Nock
has been the least shy, Skopaz said.
"All of us have had an education on breasts," Skopaz said.
"Each (survivor) has a different perspective in the world of
breast cancer, and it's been a learning experience for most of
us. Some have no (breast), some have reconstruction, some
have one. We kind of joke about and talk about it."
