Better Business Bureau’s ruling favors claims for WhoNu? cookies
NEW YORK — Suncore Products, L.L.C. may support certain advertising claims for its WhoNu? cookies, according to the National Advertising Division (N.A.D.) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. The N.A.D., a self-regulatory forum for the advertising industry, requested substantiation for certain print, Internet and television claims made by Suncore Products. The claims included: • ”As much fiber as a bowl of oatmeal” • ”As much calcium and vitamin D as an 8-oz glass of milk” • ”As much vitamin C as a cup of blueberries” • ”As much iron as a cup of spinach” • ”As much vitamin E as two cups of carrot juice” • ”As much vitamin B12 as a cup of cottage cheese and fruit” • ”As much vitamin A as an 8-oz glass of tomato juice” • ”Each delicious 3-cookie serving has 3 grams of fiber, is an excellent source of calcium, iron, vitamins A, B12, C, D, and E, and has a total of 20 essential vitamins and minerals.” The N.A.D. said Suncore Products

avoided making a direct comparison of WhoNu? cookies to whole fruits or vegetables and limited claims to the nutrition supplied by a vitamin or a mineral. The N.A.D. also said Suncore Products refrained from expressly comparing WhoNu? cookies to whole fruits and vegetables, did not depict actual foods on its labels but rather cartoonish sketches, did not recommend its cookies as a substitute for healthy snacks, avoided making health claims and clearly identified the nutrient in the food that was being compared to the advertiser ’s product. Richardson to acquire Great Northern Grain facility
WINNIPEG, MAN. — Richardson International Ltd. has entered an agreement to acquire the Nampa, Alta., grain handling and crop input retail facility of Great Northern Grain. Financial terms of the transaction, which is expected to close by Feb. 9, were not disclosed. The facility has 17,300 tonnes of storage capacity, a full cleaning line for wheat and canola, and a 52-car spot on the Canadian National rail line. Additionally, the facility has an 8,400-square-foot crop protection and seed warehouse for retailing crop input products. Richardson said it plans to add 14,000 tonnes of grain storage and increase the facility’s rail car spot to handle 104-car unit trains later this spring. By fall, plans call for additional fertilizer storage and installation of a 200-tonne-per-hour blending system.

CHS returning $421 million to cooperative owners
ST. PAUL, MINN. — CHS Inc. said it will distribute a record $421 million to its farmers, ranchers and cooperatives. The cash return is based on record CHS income of $961.4 million in the year ended Aug. 31, 2011. “This cash distribution represents the value of being a cooperative owner and customer,” said Jerry Hasnedl, CHS board chairman and a St. Hilaire, Minn., farmer. “Not only do member cooperatives and producers have access to competitive CHS products, crop marketing and business services throughout the year, they also share in our profits. This allows them to invest in the future of their local businesses, farms and ranches, and rural communities.” CHS said it will begin distributing the funds this month to 1,060 member cooperatives and 45,500 individual members and others. Three Gonnella Baking facilities kosher certiﬁed
CHICAGO — The Gonnella Baking Co. said three of its baking and production facilities now are certified as being capable of producing kosher products. J.M. Smucker board increases share repurchase
ORRVILLE, OHIO — The board of directors of The J.M. Smucker Co. increased the company’s share repurchase authorization by five million common shares. The company currently has about two million common shares remaining for repurchase under its January 2011 board authorization.
