ecently, I had an amazing experience. For
background, allow me to share a little
about my history as a pilot. I hold a private
pilot license with an instrument rating. I'm qualified in
single-engine land aircraft, and I've been checked out in
complex airplanes. I've accumulated
over 500 hours total time. One hour of
the time was in a Hughes 269. I've had
the opportunity to fly a Hughes UH-1
experimental simulator for about five
minutes in which I managed to land
successfully, although not anywhere
near the helipad. I've also flown an
experimental 747 simulator in which
I crashed. I've had some lessons in
multiengine airplanes. Few would give
me credit for being an experienced
pilot. More likely, those in the know
would point out the 500-hour mark
is where many pilots are in danger of
having their confidence outweigh their
skill.
With this experience, I climbed
aboard a full-scale simulator for a
prototype electric quadcopter with
a fifth motor and propeller designed to allow the
aircraft to fly as a fixed-wing during cruise. The pilot
in command's seat is on the right in this aircraft. I sat
on the left. A technician pilot sat in the right seat, took
off vertically, and then rapidly transitioned to forward
flight in fixed-wing mode. He did a circle of the airport

and then landed vertically on the ramp. I was almost
drooling with anticipation.
" May I give it a try? " I asked.

" Sure, " he replied, and with no briefing, other than
the control I needed to use to engage the fifth propeller,
I took off. Unlike a helicopter, the
quadcopter didn't need any antitorque
input to keep the nose pointed
straight ahead. At his encouragement,
I tilted the nose down a bit and
engaged the fifth prop. We accelerated
quickly, and I made my own lap
around the airport in fixed-wing
mode.
I thought it best to land the aircraft
as a fixed-wing, since most of my
experience is in landing airplanes.
Then I repeated a mistake I've
made before when flying simulators
visually. I kept the pattern and final
approach too close to the runway. I
turned onto a short final and pulled
back the power on the fifth propellor.
Since my pilot didn't volunteer
approach speeds or stall speeds
and I didn't ask, I was not prepared when I entered an
aerodynamic stall at about 200 feet above ground level.
The aircraft broke cleanly, the nose dropped, and we
were now staring at the rapidly approaching concrete of
the runway. Thank goodness the simulator was not full
motion. I hauled up on the collective, and the four rotors
