Cleck recommended that people listen to Colin Powell
speak briefly about leadership. In 2011, a White House fellow
asked him how he would define the key characteristics of effective leadership, and Powell responded with one word: trust.
" Leadership ultimately comes down to creating conditions of
trust within an organization, " Powell said. " Good leaders are
people who are trusted by followers. Leaders take organizations past the level that the science of management says is
possible. "
Powell said one of his sergeants at the infantry school at
Fort Benning once barked at him, " Lieutenant, you'll know
you are a good leader when people follow you - if only out of
curiosity. " Powell added it's the best definition of leadership he
has ever heard.
" What he is saying is they trust you. And you built up that
trust. How did you do it? Clear mission statement, selfless

service. People look at you, and they trust you because you are
leading selflessly as the leader, not self-serving.
" And you prepare the followers, you train them with what
they need to get the job done. Don't give them the job if you are
not going to give them the resources and that you are prepared
to take the risks with them. And they told us at the infantry
school, lieutenant, no matter how cold it is you must never look
cold. No matter how hungry you are lieutenant, you must never
appear hungry. No matter how terrified you are lieutenant, you
must never look terrified. Because if you are terrified, scared,
hungry and cold, they will be terrified, scared, hungry and cold.
" I have got away with that many times in the course of my career being scared to death, cold and wanting to go to sleep - but
no - let's go, let's keep going. Let's go around this corner if only
out of curiosity. And they will follow you into the darkest night
down the deepest valley up the highest hill if they trust you.
" So the essence of leadership is doing all about the science
of management says you can with resources then taking that
extra step, giving it that spark, and that spark comes from getting people to trust you so that they will follow you - if only
out of curiosity. " q
