Wood turned dolls are also made as souvenirs in Bangladesh. These dolls range in size from 3 to 8-inches tall. This Bolivian carved couple were originally in the artifact lending library of the Newark, New Jersey, Library. Standing 9-inches tall, they are all wood and came in a cardboard packing box used to loan them out. Their heads are carved wood that has been painted. The RarĂ¡muri or Tarahumara are a group of indigenous people of the Americas living in the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. They are renowned for their long-distance running ability. These roughly 5-inch tall souvenir dolls are completely carved and jointed at the shoulders and hips. ABOVE RIGHT: Russian matryoshkas have been made since the 1890s. The dolls seen here are all modern and were all produced in the 1970s or 1980s. These earlier souvenir dolls were crafted in areas of Russia that had specific styles of dolls unique to their area. The large set in the middle is from the Semenov area and this style is easily recognizable. The dolls to the left come from the area of Brest. The " bullet " shaped dolls to the left of the Semenov set come from the Ukraine and the two sets on the far right are from Marisol. RIGHT: Poland also produced nesting dolls, with these being made in the 1960s. The most commonly found dolls are the two on the left-the lady and the sailor.
