On A Roll: Steiff's Prewar Pull Toy
and Riding Animals
Steiff's earliest turn-of-last century rolling toys
featured a standard line standing bear or animal on
metal wheel. The line included smaller pull toys and
larger riding animals. The riding animals were often
made with an internal metal skeleton (held in place by
excelsior stuffing) and could support the weight of a fullgrown
adult. Starting in the early 19-teens, the company
began actively transitioning from using metal wheels to
using wooden wheels on all of their rolling production.
This was likely done for two key business reasons.
First, wooden wheels enabled design flexibility.
Wooden wheels, unlike metal wheels, could be
painted in bright hues, adding to an item's appeal,
appearance, and perceived value. Red, blue, and green
were typical prewar wooden wheel colors. Wooden
wheels could be drilled slightly off center, and became
known as the company's legacy " eccentric " wheels.
When an eccentric wheeled toy was pulled along,
it waddled or shimmied in motion, just like the real
animal would. Toys with eccentric wheels were
launched in 1912, with ducks being one of the first
animals to get this novel treatment. Their advertising
billed them as, " This waddling felt duck with brightly
colored fathers is fixed onto solidly built, eccentric wooden
wheels, which provide the duck with its characteristic
