" Ginger " has oil-painted facial features, defined eye
sockets with outlined blue eyes, painted lashes and real
lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth
with full outlined lips, blushed cheeks, defined ears, red
human hair in bobbed fashion, stitch-jointed limbs,
individual fingers, toes and thumbs with wire
framework for flexibility. She is wearing a green linen
romper dress with smocking, hair ribbon, bloomers, and
carrying shoes. She is marked " Webbs Patent No 104075
1916 " on a paper label on her neck. She came with two
pencil written notes on a luggage label. One side says,
" MY NAME IS GINGER, born in 1918, " and the other
side says, " Miss Dora Webb R.M.S.,106 Burton Rd,
Melton Mowbray. "
So, who was Miss Dora Webb? Given Florence
and Dora shared the same surname, the address on
the luggage label matched the address listed in the
patent and the date for the patent was just a couple of
years earlier than the date on the label, common sense
would suggest there was some relationship between
the two people.
And there was - in fact I was able to find out about
the whole Webb family - the father, Morpeth Webb
(architect and surveyor), the mother Florence Sophia,
their two daughters Mahala Theodora (known as
Dora), miniature painter and Millicent Cecilia (known
as Millie), a sculptor. There was also a brother, John
Adams, but I could not find out anything about
him. And they all lived at 106 Burton Road, Melton
Mowbray, Leicestershire. I checked and the Melton
Mowbray house is still there - it is described as a semidetached
with three reception rooms, seven bedrooms
and three bathrooms, so ideal for the large, creative
Webb family!
During my research, I came across the Melton
Mowbray Museum. They knew about the Webb family
and had one of the Webb dolls on display. They were
very helpful and sent me lots of information and
pictures, including a lovely black and white one of the
two sisters in their later years.
I have now found a number of these dolls and there
is definitely a family resemblance. They have two things
in common - first, the original clothing is always a short
plain dress with lovely smocking and second, they
nearly all have red hair. Unfortunately, the museum only
had black and white photos of Dora and Millie so there
is no evidence of where the red hair came from - but I
like to imagine both Dora and Millie with lovely red
flowing locks that were used to make the wigs for their
mum's dolls!
So, there you are - next time you come across an all
leather doll that looks like " Ginger " , you will know you
have found a lovely Webb doll!
