For most Virginians, the cold weather has
finally had its last hurrah. Eager to get back
outside, we're clearing the last signs of leaves
and sticks from our decks and patios and
daydreaming of get-togethers.
In this issue, you'll find more than 35 cocktail
recipes to get you started. Our golf-inspired sips
are here just in time for the Masters Tournament
in April. Mix up an Eagle, a Birdie or, if you're really
skilled, a Hole in One!

It's not too early to think about celebrating
the red, white and blue as we approach the
patriotic trifecta of Memorial Day, Flag Day and
Independence Day. Our story on page 18 will jump start your planning with 13
cocktail recipes-one recipe for each of Old Glory's stripes.
If you've ever been curious about mezcal, tequila or the fabled " worm, " you'll enjoy
our article " For the Love of Mezcal. " River Hawkins, mezcal aficionado and owner
of The Bebedero in Charlottesville, discusses his fascinating education on the
spirit and its many nuances. Read why this former Scotch drinker created an entire
restaurant dedicated to a Mexican spirit that has recorded double-digit growth in
popularity. See page 26.
Virginia ABC continues to expand its retail presence across the commonwealth. With
402 stores in operation and more in the pipeline, 92% of Virginians find themselves
within 10 miles of one of our stores. Learn what goes in to making an ABC store.
Our article, beginning on page 42, takes readers to the small town of Jonesville in
Lee County, in the extreme southwestern corner of the state, for the opening of our
400th store.
We introduce more than 50 new items this quarter, including many American
whiskeys and tequilas, as well as a few cordials, ready-to-drink cocktails and Virginia
wines. See product descriptions beginning on page 3.
Meet Teresa Kestner, assistant manager of Store 207 in Glen Allen, in our Spotlight on
Service (page 13). Her reading list includes " Tasting Whiskey, " Doctors and Distillers "
and " Make it a Double. " We travel to my hometown of Virginia Beach for our distillery
spotlight on Beach Vodka. This woman-owned distillery has a distinct beach vibe
going on that you'll pick up on even if you're not able to visit its tasting room.
In Behind The Bar, on page 72, you'll meet Nick Nejak of Arlington's Green Pig Bistro.
He compares bartending to baking-find a recipe you like, try it to the letter, then
venture outside of that.
