T
he Masters golf tournament is as much
a part of the American springtime as
The
Eagle
longer days, robins pulling worms and the
first pitch of the baseball season.
This year's event-April 11-14-will
take place, as always, at Augusta National
Golf Course in Augusta, Georgia, and will
be the 90th annual tournament, coinciding
sweetly with the 90th anniversary of Virginia
ABC (see our celebration in the Q1
'24 issue, beginning on page 14).
And after the Masters' famous green
jacket is donned, as has been the tradition
for the tournament winner since 1959,
there's more great springtime golf, with
the PGA Championship in Louisville, May
16-19, and the U.S. Open at Pinehurst,
North Carolina, June 13-16.
Ties between golf and spirits became a
bit stronger last year as champion golfers
Brooks Koepka and Michelle Wie West
both became partners in Casa Azul Tequila.
Koepka is a five-time PGA-tour champion
and Wie West a five-time LPGA winner.
Mexico-based Casa Azul was founded in
2020.
▶ 1½ OZ GIN
▶ ½ OZ MARASCHINO LIQUEUR
▶ ⅓ OZ LEMON JUICE
▶ CITRUS TWIST
▶ ICE
Add ingredients to a cocktail shaker
and shake vigorously with ice. Strain
into a cocktail glass and, if you like,
garnish with your favorite citrus
twist.

▶ 1½ OZ GIN
▶ 1/2 OZ ST-GERMAINE
ELDERFLOWER LIQUEUR
(20% ABV)
▶ ⅓ OZ SIMPLE SYRUP
▶ 5 FRESH MINT LEAVES
▶ CRUSHED ICE
Toss everything into a shaker with
crushed ice. Shake for 10 seconds before
double-straining into a martini glass.
To celebrate those tournaments, to
elevate your watch party or perhaps even
to toast your own golf group's great shots
this spring, we've gathered a few great
cocktails around the theme of golf at its
very best.
Let's start with a few green spirits,
in honor of the Masters' jacket and the
courses' green-grass surfaces like no other
in the world.
Green River Kentucky Bourbon
750 ml, 45% ABV, $34.99
This 90-proof whiskey is rich in color
with a golden-amber hue. Green River is
made with locally sourced corn featuring
a mashbill of 70% corn, 21% winter rye
and 9% malted barley. The higher rye
content contributes warming spice notes
on the nose and palate.
▶ 1 ½ OZ SCOTCH
▶ ¼ OZ SHERRY
▶ ⅓ OZ FRESH LEMON JUICE
▶ ⅓ OZ PINK GRAPEFRUIT JUICE
▶ 1 TBSP CHAMOMILE HONEY
▶ CLUB SODA
▶ ICE
Fill a rocks glass with ice. Add all the
ingredients to a cocktail shaker, shake
for 20 seconds and strain
into the glass.
▶ 1½ OZ SCOTCH
▶ 1½ OZ BLACK TEA, COOLED
▶ ⅓ OZ FRESH LEMON JUICE
▶ ¼ OZ SIMPLE SYRUP
▶ 1 ORANGE
Shake all the liquid ingredients together,
strain into a highball glass and garnish
with a twist of orange peel.
Dewar's Lemon Wedge
Cocktail: official drink
of the U.S. Open
▶ 1½ OZ. DEWAR'S 12-YEAR-OLD
(40% ABV)
▶ 3 OZ. CLUB SODA
▶ 2 OZ. LEMONADE
Combine ingredients over ice and stir
for desired dilution. Garnish with lemon.
