wind through the Roanoke Valley for those that prefer pavement, and more bike lanes are being added to local streets as motorists learn to "share the road." Chad Wheeling with the Roanoke IMBA chapter says "there are plenty of trails," for those that want to give mountain biking a try. The local group and Visit Virginia's Blue Ridge are also trying to convince the parent IMBA to establish an east coast center here: "we're in the process. A group [will] determine if we're ready." Wheeling favors trails accessible from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Efforts are underway to transform local tributaries like the Roanoke River and Tinker Creek into paddling destinations, a "Blueway" primarily for kayaks and floats. Several launch ramps have been built, including one that opened last year on South Jefferson Street near the Virginia Tech Carilion campus. Carvins Cove offers kayak and canoe rentals from late spring through mid-October from the boat launch area at the main entrance.
