form and the relationship of its parts to the selection of
materials and systems." Designing for expansion is key
particularly for projects that may take years to complete
and must be adaptable to accommodate future technology,
designs, and passenger needs.
Designers are now opting for more durable materials,
such as terrazzo floor tiles over carpeting, which can

be more expensive but will last longer, Conforte notes.
They also are creating spaces where retail, seating, and
workspaces can be changed with minimal effort, and
creating neutral-use spaces that can accommodate future
additions.
"Integrating equipment requiring significant space into
existing airports consistently challenges airport designers,"
says Kees Kaan, director, Kaan Architecten, Rotterdam,
the Netherlands and São Paulo, Brazil. He envisions a
future where advanced automated screening tools will
eliminate the need for individual security screens."But in
the meantime, we can only provide the proper
spatial conditions to make it possible to implement
these new technologies when available."
Kaan's design for the new terminal at the
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, for example,
has space beneath its check-in plateau for
additional technology infrastructure and security
innovations, such as facial recognition systems. "It
KEES KAAN
is very difficult to predict the future, especially in
this era of enormous technological development,"
says Kaan. "We know there will be changes in the future,
and even though we don't know what they will be, we are
creating space to accommodate them." ■

& OUT
DELAYED
Things that
grow. From
Portland
International
Airport's vertical
wall of plants in
Portland, Oregon,
USA to the
towering palm
trees at Hamad
International
Airport in Doha,
Qatar, bringing
the outdoors in
is a growing focus.
"The ability to get
fresh air is hugely
beneficial for
travelers,"
Osbaugh says.

Strip malls and
food courts. Retail
shops and dining
options always
will be a mainstay
of the airport
experience, but
forcing passengers
through massive
shopping halls is a
thing of the past.
Designers are being
more thoughtful
about the placement of retail and
restaurants to maximize spend while
minimizing roadblocks. "We want
to give passengers spaces to shop
or eat that are generous enough to
enjoy without creating bottlenecks,"
Osbaugh says.

Clutter. The days of superfluous iconic
sculptures and design that compromises
passenger experience are over, Kaan
says. He sees a movement toward
more restrained designs and "focus on
a kind of exacting functionality that
embeds comfort, daily ease of use, and a
suitability of purpose."
