Relying on accurate information permits making the
best decisions and adapting to the needs of the city
in real time.
These data are integrated and are managed through
predictive rules and models, which turn them into
information.

The data are obtained from multiple sensors and devices
that are scattered across the city.

Figure 1. Coruña chose to implement its smart city platform to function as the nervous system for city information and services.

public services in the areas of infrastructure, e-government, energy, tourism, commerce, and housing. The earliest of these projects involved the integration of the
various disparate IoT-enabled platforms deployed
throughout the city into Sofia2 as their common management platform (the brain), but still within their own
clearly defined functional verticals. In this way, Sofia2
handles much-or in some cases all-of the processing
behind these higher-level applications while allowing
the sharing and management of common data and
computing resources across Coruña's enterprise. Previously described as Coruña's brain, Sofia2 can also be
thought of as the city's operating system: a middleware
platform that manages the processing and resource
allocation for all of the urban applications that provide
services to Coruña's government officials, citizens, and
other stakeholders.

In addition to integrating its existing infrastructure into
the Smart Coruña platform, Coruña wanted to drive
innovation and encourage citizen engagement by leveraging Sofia2's open-source heritage. Rather than limit
Sofia2 to integration only with its own proprietary
smart cities vertical solutions, Indra makes available an
extensive library of application programing interfaces
(APIs) to enable the development of third-party applications on the Sofia2 platform. Furthermore, Sofia2 makes
maximum use of open-source elements within its
architecture, including MongoDB and Hadoop, and
maintains independence from communication protocols by providing out-of-the-box connectors for Message
Queue Telemetry Transport, Representational State
Transfer, Java Message Service, WebSockets, and WebServices. The platform is extremely modular and
