Dairy Products
Dry milk product prices continued
to rise, with buttermilk and nonfat dry
milk higher, whey, lactose and whey
protein concentrate steady to firm, and
other products mostly unchanged.
Although some relief came late last
week, nearly two weeks of 100-degreeplus temperatures in California reduced
milk output 14% to 25%, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. Other regions reported lower milk production because of
the heat as well. Milk fat and protein levels
also were severely reduced in some areas.
Dry buttermilk prices gained 2c a lb
last week and were up more than 20c a
lb since mid-June. Supplies were tight.
Production declined.
Low- and medium-heat nonfat dry
milk prices were 1c a lb higher. High-heat
dry milk prices were steady. Production
declined seasonally, especially in the West
due to the heat. Supply was short of spot
demand in the Central and West regions.
Dry whey was steady to firm, with
supplies short in the East and West but
plentiful in the Central region. Good export and domestic demand was noted.

prices were firm, with good demand for
tight supplies. Production was steady.
Cash butter prices were sharply higher
last week as cream supplies tightened and
production decreased due to the hot weather. Unsalted supplies were especially short.
Cash cheese prices were steady, except
American process prices, which were
firmer. Supply was sufficient for modest
demand. MBN
Egg Products
Egg product prices were mixed last
week, with whole and whites steady to
firm, but yolks and blends steady to weaker. Breaking stock prices were up 2c a dozen following strong advances in graded
eggs. Supplies were fairly tight, with demand mixed depending on region.
Dried whole egg was 5c a lb higher,
but dried yolks and blends were 5c lower.
Whites were unchanged but firm. Business
was more active than in recent weeks.
Frozen egg whites advanced 2c a lb.
Whites, yolks and blends were steady.
Liquid whole egg was up 1c a lb, yolks
down 2c and whites unchanged. MBN
Cocoa
Trading of cocoa powder was slow last
week, although inquiries for 2008 persisted and natural powder prices edged up.
Weakness in the U.S. dollar sent Europeansourced alkalized product prices higher.
Strong interest was noted for black alkalized
because of tight supplies. Traders also have
seen good demand for chocolate liquor.
The demand was thought to be related to
increased production of dark chocolate.
The long-awaited disarmament of militias began in the Ivory Coast. Elections
were scheduled for October. MBN
