cwts to 1,532,193. Capacity in Missouri
was reported to have increased 11,400
cwts, accounting for 44% of the total capacity increase. A major revision in Missouri's capacity adjustment, expected in
the May summary report, would have a
significant effect on the total change in
U.S. milling capacity. As reported, U.S.
milling capacity was up 1.7% in 2007.
Without an increase in Missouri, capacity climbed only 1%.
Other capacity increases were North
Dakota, up 1,000 cwts; Utah, 400; and
Kansas, 297. Michigan, Minnesota,
North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania as
well as Washington and Oregon all were
unchanged. Texas was down 200 cwts.
The only recent change was in Virginia and Maryland, where daily capacity was up 4,500 between the second and third quarters.
Between the benchmark numbers
for all of 2006 and those for the fourth
quarter of 2007, rate of grind increased
in nine states for which comparisons
are currently available and decreased
in two. There were no comparable
data for a number of states and stategroupings. U.S. rate of grind increased
3.9 percentage points to 90.4%. "All
other" was not comparable.
In the fourth quarter, the rate of grind
by Missouri mills gained 14.3 percentage points from 2006 to 90.3%, followed
by Minnesota mills up 10.7 percentage
points to 87.5%; North Dakota 9.3 to
92.3%; Michigan 7.8 to 84.2%; Pennsylvania 7.8 to 91.7%; North Carolina 7.7
to 79.7%; Washington and Oregon 4 to
91.1%; Ohio 1.9 to 97.1%; and Texas 1.3
to 88.1%. Utah was down 8.9 to 80.2%
and Kansas down 2.9 to 75.4%. MBN

Durum semolina output in 2007 rises
2% to attain new six-year high
WASHINGTON - Production of straight
semolina and durum flour by U.S. mills
in 2007 increased to a six-year high of
32,576,000 cwts, up 2% from 31,948,000 in
2006, according to the Census Bureau of
the U.S. Department of Commerce. This
was the largest semolina production since
32,930,000 in 2001. Output in 2007 also was
up 20.8% from the recent low of 26,959,000
in 2004. It was 1.1% below the all-time record of 32,930,000 cwts in 2001.
Statistics on durum semolina issued
since 2000 are not strictly comparable
with earlier years because of a change in
the data. Beginning in 2000, the Census
Bureau said: "Prior to the first quarter
2000, these data included only establishments classified in Flour Milling, NAICS

pasta manufacturers if they have

The North American Millers' Association provides funding to the
Census Bureau in support of the
compilation of these statistics.
At 32,576,000 cwts, semolina
and durum flour output in 2007
was the fourth largest in a series
dating back to 1966. The record
semolina output occurred in 2001,
at 32,930,000 cwts. This was followed by 1994 at 32,631,000, 1996 at
32,623,000, 2007 at 32,576,000, 1993
