Cash Wheat
HARD WINTER. The hard red winter
wheat basis in Kansas City was 21¢ a bu
higher to 4¢ lower last week. Indications of a
higher protein crop than in 2021 pressured
the top third of the scale while the bottom
three proteins notched the widest hikes.
Hot, dry weather in the early days of the
week had harvest going full steam ahead.
Better ideas about crop size and quality had
more growers willing to sell forward. Still,
the to-arrive market had yet to fully re-activate
with pricing inquiries comprising most
of the activity.
At mid-week, some central Kansas farmers
were shut out of harvest activities by
rain that had them " a little concerned about
test weights, " a trader said, but no deterioration
in quality had been observed.
The US Department of Agriculture said
winter wheat was 27% harvested in Kansas
on June 19 (2% a week earlier, 18% as the
recent five-year average), 72% in Oklahoma
(32%, 60%) and 72% in Texas (53%, 65%).
Plains Grains, Inc. (PGI) in its weekly harvest
summary issued June 23 estimated harvest
completion at 78% in Texas, 89% in Oklahoma,
and 35% in Kansas, and said combines were
likely to roll in southern Nebraska in 3 to 5 days
and in Colorado in 10 days. Based on 126 of an
expected 500 samples, protein was averaging
12.3%, test weight was averaging 60.5 lbs per bu,
and grade was No. 1 hard red winter, PGI said.
" Isolated reports of disease and pest pressures
have been noted, including wheat
streak mosaic, barley yellow dwarf, stripe
rust and sawfly, " PGI said.
The USDA put June 19 good-to-excellent
winter wheat ratings at 27% in Kansas (26%
a week earlier), 14% in Oklahoma (17%), 5%
in Texas (5%), 14% in Colorado (21%), 25% in
Nebraska (29%), 35% in South Dakota (39%)
and 17% in Montana (16%). Winter wheat

headed was 100% in Kansas, Oklahoma and
Texas; 98% in Colorado; 95% in Nebraska; 76%
in South Dakota and 40% in Montana.
Salina wheat bids through July were
15¢ under KC July. Hutchinson wheat bids
through July were 15¢ under KC July; August,
15¢ under September. Wichita elevator bids
through July were 25¢ under KC July. Gulf
bids on 12%-protein hard red winter wheat for
nearby were 148¢ over KC July.
HARD SPRING. Premiums on hard red
spring wheat were 30¢ a bu higher to 55¢
lower last week.
The USDA said spring wheat was 98%
planted by June 19, near the average of 100%.
Still planting were growers in North Dakota,
97% seeded compared with 91% a week earlier,
and Minnesota, 98% planted compared
with 92% a week earlier. The crop was mostly
in good-to-excellent condition: 59% in the
six states, 71% in North Dakota, 66% in South
Dakota, 64% in Minnesota, 25% in Montana,
73% in Idaho and 89% in Washington.
The North Dakota Wheat Commission
said planting in that state was essentially finished.
North Dakota emergence was at 80%,
up sharply from 56% a week earlier but well
behind 97% as the average for the date.
" The first real extreme heat of the season
prevailed during the weekend of June 17-19
with some locations exceeding 100 degrees, "
ND Wheat said. " This was beneficial in accelerating
the development of the later crop,

moisture to sustain the crop, and the heat
was not too prolonged. "
SOFT RED. Harvest in the Mid-South was
close to wrapping up, a miller said. A few
days of hot, fair weather allowed western
Kentucky farmers to collect most of their
wheat. Producers there had been concerned
about year-over-year production declines,
but a miller said those were to be expected
in light of " the extraordinarily high bushels
per acre last year. "
The USDA said winter wheat harvested
by June 19 was 34% in Missouri (35% as the
recent average), 18% in Illinois (29%), 7% in
Indiana (13%) and 0% in Ohio (1%).
Good-to-excellent condition ratings on June
19 were 59% in Missouri, 69% in Illinois, 67% in
Indiana, 55% in Ohio and 48% in Michigan.
St. Louis-area mill bids nearby on soft
red winter wheat were 3¢ over Chicago July;
August, 15¢ under September. Toledo mill
bids nearby through September were the
Chicago September price; October-December,
25¢ over Chicago December. The Toledo
elevator nearby bid was 15¢ under Chicago
July. Cincinnati elevator new crop bid was
20¢ under Chicago July. Michigan soft white
winter wheat mill bids were 15¢ over Chicago
Sept.; soft red winter wheat mill bids
were the September price to 5c under Sept.
Gulf bids on soft red winter wheat nearby
