Odd Hours, Always On Schedule! By JASOn SOeDA You’re on the graveyard shift — the wrong side of the clock. While everyone else is getting a good night’s sleep, your day has just begun. You feel a bit weary. And it can be spooky working in the dark. But shake it off! You’re a professional and you always deliver top quality work, whether it is day or night. Heat of the Night It’s almost midnight on a Friday at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The night crew from Royal Contracting is resurfacing the road between Campus Center and Hemenway Hall. A tractor-mounted hydraulic backhoe pours hot asphalt on the road while three men rake and spread the 350 degree hot mix neatly over the driveway. Dennis Kinoshita, a supervisor for Royal Contracting, directs and monitors the action. This is his third straight week working the night shift. What a way to spend a Friday night, right? “I’m an old dog,” Kinoshita says. “I’ve been doing this for over 40 years. I actually feel fortunate. In this poor economy, our people are still working.” Kinoshita says some of the younger Dennis Kinoshita, supervisor guys on his team for Royal Contracting may be less than enthused about the work, sometimes seeing only the drawbacks. In reality, he says, the benefits are plentiful.
