h e R i Ta g e 文化遗产 T h e R i T z - C a R lT o n , n e w y o R k , s p R i n g 1 9 9 2 jerry garcia Before he was the lead guitar player in the Grateful Dead, the legendary psychedelic rock band, Jerry Garcia was a promising student at the San Francisco Art Institute. Always a reluctant rock star, Garcia continued to draw and paint as a respite from the pressures and boredom of long concert tours — he traveled with a suitcase full of paints, sketchbooks and Japanese calligraphy brushes. He often claimed to hear music as colors, and his paintings are themselves vividly musical compositions, drawing on Fauvism, comic art and Surrealism. His most productive period was in the 10 years before his death in 1995, when the therapeutic benefits of making art helped assuage the ill health he was suffering.
