between the airport and downtown, you can walk
to Vietnamese pho, Ethiopian injera and doro wat,
Bhutanese community gardens, Hispanic bakeries,
and African American soul food. Closer to downtown there’s the Chinatown-International District
and Japantown, a few blocks from the sports bars

surrounding the pro baseball, soccer, and football
stadiums lining the Puget Sound waterfront. Just
south of that, Georgetown has become Seattle’s
latest refuge for its native export, the “hipster.” If
you can spend three days in Seattle, here’s my take
on how to have a memorable experience.
Day 1: Ballard, Biking, Beach
Ballard is a good place to start. Located on
the north shore of the shipping canal that
connects Lake Union and Puget Sound, Ballard
grew up as home to fishing fleets, shipbuilders, and
the shingle industry of the late 19th century. Its
salty, blue-collar history has only recently been
polished by the young urban crowds drawn to its
quiet neighborhood streets and the dense, old-world
strip at its historic heart: Ballard Avenue.
At the east end of Ballard, step into the Dutch
Bike Company to rent a classic bike and enjoy great
espresso. Seattle is one of the most bike-friendly
cities in the U.S., and you can spend an entire
weekend exploring on two wheels. But for a few
hours, rent a comfortable, Euro-style cruising bike
and ride west on Ballard toward Puget Sound.
Take a break about a mile from the bike shop at
the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks. The Army Corps
of Engineers operates the locks, which lift and drop
anything from weekender sailboats to rusted Alaskan fishing vessels and gravel-loaded, football-fieldlong barges. During summer, millions of salmon
fight their way up to Cascadian spawning rivers
