Induction Machines Fault
Detection: An Overview

oday, instrumentation plays an essential role within
Industry 4.0, integrating elements and technologies
at the forefront of the industrial world such as
the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Business Intelligence,
or Cybersecurity, among others. Thinking about
the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), it is looking for the
highest number of systems to be connected to the Internet
and provide reports on their work, performance, condition,
temperature, levels, etc. to improve production processes,
save energy, reduce costs, among others. Regarding the
maintenance and condition of the machines, currently in
the literature, there are several works about the detection of
faults or possible failures in the short term in the systems,
that intend to plan preventive or corrective maintenance.
All of this implies a high development of signal processing
and decision-making algorithms. In this paper, a description
related to bearing and broken
rotor fault detection in
induction motors for condition-based
maintenance
is presented.
Introduction
to Induction
Machines
This paper focuses on induction
machines as they
are present in all factories
around the world. Induction
machines are used in
many processes for simple
or complex tasks, thanks
to their robust construction
and accessible design.
For that, fault detection
in squirrel cage induction
motors is a topic that has
been explored over the past few years. Nowadays, thanks
to the technological advances in the area of instrumentation
and signal processing, it is possible to develop instruments
with a higher sensitivity and precision than years ago [1]-
[2]. Thus, many processes have been improved. In the case
of monitoring in the induction machine, fault detection has
been achieved at an incipient or initial level. The relevance
in the development of monitoring systems for rotating machines
is the ability to detect faults and the speed with such
faults can be detected. There are different types of faults in
rotating machines, which can be classified according to their
origin as electrical or mechanical and according to their location
in the rotor or stator. Fig. 1 shows the main parts that
constitute the induction machine; one can see the stator (the
stationary part), the rotor (the rotating part), the bearings, the
shaft, the short circuit rings, the rotor bars, the bearing balls
