away with hiding any imperfections in
the midrange. The lower midrange felt a
bit smeary on some material, mainly in
the 110-225 Hz range, but the detailed
mids more than made up for it.
The low end is impressively controlled.
It has excellent transient detail and
punch, with a full yet un-emphasized response
down into the 70-80 Hz range.
The manual suggests its low end extends
down to 30 Hz, and perhaps it does,
but I sensed some information loss below
70 Hz. If you mix bass-heavy material,
it might be proactive to pair the Gauss
7 with a sub. That said, I felt confident
mixing without a sub during my time with
them. I found the low end to be an honest
representation of the mix that ultimately
translated well to other systems.
In many ways, this sonic profile seems
perfectly suited for AMT tweeters. The
top end is impressively smooth and natural.
If anything, it tilts slightly to the warmer
side, but it does so without sounding
rolled off. It benefits from an airy extension
that provides all of the needed
information without being hyped in any
way. It's natural and accurate. I found
the 3-5 kHz range to get a bit fatiguing
with material like heavy rock or large
horn sections, but it felt more so due to
the content than the speakers overly emphasizing
that range.
One of the most impressive aspects is
the level of detail in the transients. These
are genuinely punchy speakers. The image
feels immersive with a strong phantom
center, and I found it to have a wide
sweet spot. This was illustrated well with
one of my go-to references (and likely a
go-to mix reference for many!): Beck's
Morning Phase. Here, the Gauss 7 provided
detail in the acoustic guitars and
snare, along with a very smooth top
end. The overall response is very flat
and it tells you like it is.
Similarly, Silk Sonic's debut album,
An Evening with Silk Sonic, was an
excellent sonic match for the Gauss
7-retro roots with a modern twist. The
detailed transients in 'Fly As Me' had impact
while still feeling controlled. Like a
good drummer, its low-end punch feels
very much in the pocket.
Final Thoughts
While I've made the NS-10 reference
already, I'd say the Gauss 7 feels like a
moderately less clinical sibling; a bit more
full-bodied and dynamic while maintaining
an impressive level of accuracy
and detail. Overall, I'd classify them as
mid-forward and a touch warm, but the
response feels flat from top to bottom. For
the price, there aren't many competitors
that can match this level of honesty in a
reference monitor, which puts the Gauss 7
on a shortlist for me. Would I turn to these
to kick my feet up on a Sunday afternoon
and listen to an album or two? No, and
that's OK-I'd turn to these when I need to
hear the details and mix confidently!
