Happy New Year!

It has been another challenging year, and COVID
looks to be with us for the long haul. Our practices
were affected like most other small businesses,
with many of our colleagues decreasing work
schedules or even closing their doors. Many podiatrists
stepped up to do their part alongside our MD/
DO counterparts by giving COVID vaccinations and
serving where needed in their communities. Our
sacrifices have not gone unnoticed.
On the bright side, there is still air in our lungs,
which means we have a lot to be thankful for. I
personally am thankful for my health and family.
I'm thankful to serve on the APMA Board of
Trustees and chair the Legislative Committee. It
is an honor to serve alongside a diverse group of
individuals who work tirelessly every day to defend
and advance our profession.
The new year brings new goals and resolutions.
One of my top five goals for 2022 is getting more
active physically now that restrictions are beginning
to ease up and we are seeing more businesses
reopen their doors. The isolation brought about
by the pandemic caused more trips to the refrigerator
than to the gym. I am excited to get out
more, socialize, and advocate for our profession. I
am eager to see everyone face-to-face at our next
APMA House of Delegates meeting.

But my number-one goal for the 2022 calendar
year is to finally pass the Helping Ensure Lifeand
Limb-Saving Access to Podiatric Physicians
(HELLPP) Act. For the past 17 years, we have fought
for Medicaid to recognize podiatrists as physicians.
With your help, and the advocacy of members just
like you, I believe we can and we will be successful
in passing this bill. But we need APMA members
and friends of the profession to call on Congress
to pass this bill! Please visit APMA's eAdvocacy
website, www.apma.org/eAdvocacy, to send our
pre-written messages as many times as it takes to
accomplish this goal. Unless and until we are the
squeaky wheel, Congress will continue to ignore
us and our priorities. You have the power
as constituents.
2022 is an important election year. Make your
voice heard and let your members of Congress
know what it will take to get your vote.
Throughout this pandemic, we've heard the
phrase, " it is what it is " as a way of coping with the
harsh reality of the changes that the public health
emergency has wrought. I prefer an amendment to
this phrase: " It is what it is, but it will become what
we make it. " It is my sincere wish for everyone to
have a prosperous 2022. Working together, let's
make 2022 a year to remember!
