Middle-age spread, spare tire, potbelly, paunch - a sluggish
metabolism may be to blame.
Experts say the average metabolism begins to slow around age 20
and declines at a rate of 10 percent every decade, which easily leads
to weight gain for those who don't adjust their lifestyle and eating
habits - easier said than done. And while excess pounds are an
obvious problem for some people, other changes in the body are less
visible but just as important to identify and manage. What's worse,
these changes may have nothing to do with the size of your
waist. Aging affects the body's ability to absorb essential
vitamins and nutrients. Even the health conscious
among us may be deficient in certain vitamins and
minerals, which makes regular lab work crucial to
monitoring your overall health.
" About 44 percent of women either have, or are at
risk for, vitamin deficiencies, " said Dr. Frank Boskello,
a Village of Bonita resident. " For men, it's about
26 percent. A lot of factors play into this: diseases,
alcohol consumption, lifestyle or drug interactions. "
